I suggest you interview various agents and visit various offices... talk to new agents to see what their experience has been with that particular office.. what they like and what they do not like.

Be patient and do your homework... compare then make a well thought out decision.

CONGRATULATIONS!!! an welcome to an AMAZING career! Great choice!

Andrea, if your comment was directed towards me you're way off base. That was a sincere question not a sarcastic one. My answer was strictly tongue and cheek. Where's your sense of humor.

Thanks for the helpful recommendations. I appreciate the fact that there is a community that provides valuable feedback to its members. I will meet with various brokers and make my decision then.

To address the less pleasant comments...you are right, I did post this back in late November, but it took this long for the DRE to schedule my test, which I passed yesterday. I understand that this isn't an easy job, and I don't expect it to be. However, I do have a couple deals lined up and my fiancee and I have an extended network of friends and family, who would be happy to go through me for their real estate needs. So your concerns are appreciated, but I think I will be okay.

Again, I appreciate all of the good advice, and look forward to working with some of you.

Wow, I can't believe you said that! Nastiness? It's called being realistic. You don't have a good understanding of starting out in real estate in the economy, do you?

If you are looking to ultimately build your own real estate business versus just looking for a job in real estate, then I would definitely suggest that you explore the Keller Williams Realty model. There is a reason that Keller Williams is now the largest real estate company in the U.S. in only 30 years. Here is their KW Agent Career Training Blog: http://moving-careers.com/blog/

If there is a Better Homes and Gardens there, they are the best source of training, which is very important for a new agent.

You have some great answers here. Definitely interview the different brokerages, and if you are going to have a Mentor, perhaps meet with that person as well. Good luck with your new career!!!

Interview at least 5 and go with the one that will provide you with the most training. You need to crawl before you can walk and training is KEY.

Hi Maggie,
Real Estate is a very fun and exciting business! It takes time to learn it though, and you really need to find an office that is pro-active in helping new agents learn the ropes. Passing the exam is just the beginning for this field. The office you choose should have classes and mentorship. In the first couple of years you will be spending most of you time learning, so make sure where ever you go, they are committed to helping you succeed!

hi Maggie,
congrats on the passing of the exam.
As mentioned in REAl estate Principle....you should interview with a few brokers to see which one fits you best.

With the brokerage I belong too, we cater to New Agents ---you get the personal mentoring from our brokers, that includes Real Estate and mortgage knowledge and i will help you also, i have very unique and working strategy that is working now and i can get listings/---different from anyone else out there....and i can guarantee that --- AND there is no desk costs or yearly fee's in our brokerage either
( one of the major complaints with agents these days is it costs anywhere from 600-1300 or so just to hang a license ) and with no income coming in in the first 6 months per se, it is hard to stay afloat.

Our office is in the Mid Wilshire area, which is relatively close to Santa Monica.

would like for you to check us out. as then you will have information you can think with and compare.
Thanks for listening.

Wow Andrea, I can't believe you said that! Nastiness? Petty agents? That is uncalled for. Why would you think we are being 'nasty'? Are you living in make-believe land? Are you unaware of the hard work an agent needs to do to be successful? Are you going to tell her all she needs to do is put a sign in the ground and the home will sell and she'll make a ton of money? It's called being realistic. You don't have a good understanding of starting out in real estate in this economy, do you? I think my fellow agents would agree! And stop criticizing other agents. Not cool!

I know this is the second time you posted this. Originally, it was posted last year. What happened then? By the way, getting your license is the easy part. Getting the business is much more difficult. Good luck!
