Advice for finding a mentor?

Asked by Don Downing, San Diego, CA Tue Dec 9, 2008

What's the best way to interview and ultimately choose a mentor?

I had the thought of finding on of the top realtors, or one of the best, in the area and take them out for lunch. I thought a nice lunch would be a good way to compensate for their time and expertise. There I would ask them about starting out and how to find good mentors and local teams and the ins and outs on getting started. Heck, after lunch they might just be so impressed with me (and my choice in restaurants) that they might even take me under their wing! =P

So once again, what's the best way to interview and ultimately choose a mentor?

Colleen gave good advice and here is another idea. You will ultimately be working for a broker initially, so give lots of thought to who that will be and how well you get along with them. Qre they willing to train and mentor you? Do your personality styles match? Will you fit in with their companies team? Does the management style suit you...etc.?
I have a friend who is a broker, attorney and former FBI agent that is very knowledgeable, experienced and someone who considers training very important. Feel free to contact him to discuss your situation and needs. He is, Gary Laturno 619.741.9652 or e-mail Mention that I suggested you talk with him.

Most top agents are too busy to eat! Consider finding a mentor in a different market area, ie, someone you won't be competing with when you hit your stride. An agent in your market may not give up their most effective ideas - they have worked hard to develope their systems and may not want to give them up to agents with whom they compete for business. Get out of your box and go to seminars, like StarPower run by Howard Brinton. It's in July and it's in Denver. You'd meet top producers from across the country who teach everything from DISC personality types to internet marketing. They are the type of people you are looking for - with a natural predisposition to give back what they've learned and many of them would be happy to mentor you across the miles. And, you'd be getting bigger better ideas that may be new to your market place. Then those local top agents will be coming to you for mentoring! see the web reference and Good Luck
