Kailua-Kona has most of the major big box stores like Wal-Mart, Target, Home Depot as well as local companies within a few miles of each other. The King's and Queen's shops 40 miles north offer high-end shopping, but overall the Big Island is not a spending-driven culture.

Be prepared for sticker shock when you buy anything and rent is comparable to the Bay Area. Employment opportunities are scare, but Hawaii also enjoys a low unemployment rate of 4.4%; part of what makes Hawaii difficult is that employers only hire people on-island.

If you're serious about making Kona your home, do your research. Check online for open jobs in your field and find a local address to use in your applications. A car is a must, the Big Island is BIG, roughly the size of Connecticut and Rhode Island combined. Lastly, remember Hawaii-time. Everything moves slower here, but the wait is well worth it.

Aloha Warren. There are very few "upscale" restaurants on the Big Island in general, none are in Kailua-Kona town that I'm aware of. The closest upscale restaurant would be at the Four Seasons Hotel about 15 minutes drive north of town, and then there are several other upscale places to eat at various restaurants along the Kohala Coast 15-30 miles drive, and then some in Waimea - a 60 minute one way drive from Kona. ... more

Absolutely! Our newest fine dining establishment, Anthony's by the Sea is located on ocean-front right on the famous Alii Drive near white sands beach. I had dinner there a few weeks ago, and the experience was fabulous.

Another choice is Sam Choy's Kai Lani, offering spectacular sunset dining, perched high above the Keauhou shopping center. They have a great selection of fresh fish dishes, as well as great wines to choose from.

If you want to take a drive up north, Roys at Waikoloa Beach Resort offers exquisite Pacific fusion cuisine. Don't forget the chocolate mousse!
