The last answer is a good one. You should explore every avenue. What I wanted to add to the discussion is this. You must be persistant. The banks are overwhelmed. They have many new hires answering the phones. You may not always get the right answer or the best answer on the first call.
Of course we also have to remember that the banks don't want to make this too easy and they can't be very excited about giving back or giving up money.
Both of my clients who acheived loan modification spent the better part of 5 months making it happen. Put on your patience hat and start dialing!
