Call ONE of the Credit Bureaus and "dispute" the balance. They will send a letter to the landlord to verify the amount owed. If he does not respond within a set time, it will be removed. It is fairly common to find old info on your credit reports that are easy to clean. Just takes a little effort and should not cost you a dime!
Please feel free to contact me if I can help.

I know someone that can help you as you are now, or can help you and guide you on how to improve your score before applying for a loan. He's not located in Gal;veston, but in Houston. e-mail me firstname.lastname@example.org... more
First make sure you have taken steps to increase the odds your score will be higher. Paying off or paying down debts etc will help. Once you have done that then you can pull your credit through www.AnnualCreditReport.com (Not Free Credit Report .com) The former is run by all 3 of the credit reporting companies. You can pull your credit once each year for free but it's just your credit. It costs about $7 per bureau to get your scores.
That should not show up has a hard pull and should give you a good idea of where you stand.
Best of luck to you,
