My friend who is a property manager at an apartment complex gets her 2 bedroom apartment for $80 / month where the others rent them for $800 or so. Another friend of mine works for restaurant and her family stays in the employee housing less than a quarter mile from the business rent free. Try to get creative by offering something in return instead of paying full rent - like babysitting, housekeeping, gardening, etc. ...anything legal and reasonable.

For the long term, work on minimizing expenses and extra income sources. Increasing credit scores and be able to own your own home without worring about rent increases. I'd be happy to share some resources that I know of.

There are national preservation companies that you could sign up with and be a vendor with them practically over night.

You could network and market with REO brokers.
