Sometimes it is. You need to check you are not cutting down a tree in restricted wetlands. That is definitely going to be illegal. Otherwise, check with your town to understand regulations -- because tree cutting may be regulated by local ordinance even if not by state law. ... more

Phil's advice is correct. Many counties and municipalities now have tree ordinances. In many cases, you must show the necessity for removing the tree. There also may be size limitations on what can be taken out, and they may have provisions for you to replace a tree that is removed by another tree somewhere else on the property. Not only could you be liable for the fines, but also anyone working for you who is involved in the removal.

Yes, Florida has two types of Cypress trees: the Baldcypress, (Taxodium distichum var. distichum) and the Pondcypress, (Taxodium distichum var. nutan).

Whether it is illegal to cut them down is dependent on the jurisdiction where the trees are located, and more often then not, are protected because of the nature of the environment (wetland) in which they are typically found.
