I am sorry to hear about this problem. One of the things I do when I list a property is schedule a weekly update with the seller by email, phone or mail. I also request a face to face meeting monthly if the listing isn't sold to discuss strategy.
Small, frequent price reductions are not usually very effective. You must reduce the price significantly in order to attract a new buyer pool.
Before you hire a realtor, you could ask for references or at least read their testimonials.
