Much depends on the type and amount of the repairs. If you are doing a lot of little repairs, why not take what you would pay on the home equity loan and put it towards a repair each month.
On the other hand, if you are looking at a large improvement such as renovating the kitchen, replacing the roof, installing a new HVAC system or other large scale item that will increase the value of your home (rather than maintaining it as mentioned above), then a HELOC in my opinion is better than a home equity loan.... more
Right now , what upgrades are in a home seem to make a large difference. The current market seems to crave an updated kitchen ( granite counter tops, SS appliances, tile back splashes), hardwood flooring vs. carpet; and spacious master bedrooms with private baths. Unfortunately, some of these conditions can never be matched. Having the home look as clean and clutter free would be important to you and also being able to convey all the good things about where the home is located community wise.... more
It depends a lot on you what your situation is. Do you have a family? Are you looking to stay in Raleigh or will staying in surrounding areas be okay. There are areas such as Knightdale, Clayton, Garner that offer access to Raleigh without being in the city.
