If they signed a lease that states the term and monthly rent, it can't be changed until the term is over unless there is a provision in the lease that states the landlord can raise the rent at any time. Very strange that the landlord would want to raise only oner person's rent. That sounds a little illegal to me but I am not a lawyer. You should contact a lawyer and have them review the lease.
