There are many properties showing that haven't been for sale for literally YEARS! The best way to do it is to pick a central city that you are interested in and then do a mile radius, however far out you would like to go from that town. While very tedious, you can also pick the towns if you know a specific area or towns that you would like to avoid.

The best way is to find a Realtor to help you with your search so that we can use your criteria and our knowledge of regions, towns and specific properties that we have already seen. That way, you don't waste unneeded time searching and looking on your own. Many properties that are listed on here will require credit check and such as well so the sooner you can get that done by a Realtor, the stronger your position will be when trying to find a rental.
