The main part of the floor should be fine. However, the edges where the carpet was attached to the floor will need to be refinished.

Key word "nasty". A house can never be too clean, however, many buyers will rip out carpeting and install flooring of their choice. If it is truly nasty and dirty, then I would suggest professionally cleaning it. If you have a cleaning company give you an estimate, they should be able to tell you if it will or will not clean up nicely. If it is stained, replace it with an inexpensive carpeting. As I mentioned new owners will probably replace but it will show much better and that is really what your goal should be when trying to sell.

Best of luck.

Hi Michael,

Yes, removing the carpeting is an excellent idea. Buyers like hardwood floors and are not fond of carpeting, especially older carpet. If your floors are in pretty good condition, I feel as though it would be a great investment to remove the carpet, possibly have a light sanding and wood coating to protect them and bring out the shine. Also, wood floors do make the rooms look larger and more inviting.

I wish you the best of luck.,
