First, to answer your question. Most landlords when they run a "rental history report" the main things they are actually doing is checking your credit and eviction history. In general, most people that have Decent credit are also decent tenants.
That said, if you have a list of happy satisfied previous landlords and steady income coming in, stress those two points to potential places and you should be able to find a landlord ready to work with you!
Its probably a good idea to run your own rental history report to see what landlords know about you. Check out myrentalhistoryreport.com to get one.
Also, check out a service like rentalkharma which lets you rebuild credit by paying your rent on time. Could be a great resource for you.... more
My best friend works at IUPUI. She rents an apartment approximately 2 miles northeast of the campus in a neighborhood with apartments and homes. She walks, bikes or rides the bus to and from work. She is just north of the Mass. Ave area. There are homes and apartments for rent nearby. She is very satisfied with the area.... more
It's not just this site, Christine, many others including Craig's List have the same problem. It's mostly rental listings at the moment. I have wracked my brain as to how we can put an end to it, but since it's international, law enforcement's ability to combat it is limited. Here in New Jersey we often ask tenants to pay the realtor's fee on rentals, which is generally equal to one month's rent so a substantial amount, but I have former tenants coming back to me more and more often because they would rather pay me than take a chance on losing even more if they fall victim to one of these scams.... more
