I am a current Allen and former Mckinney resident. From my perspective Allen is friendlier and more socially cohesive. Because the entire town plan was more based on keeping amenities centrally located and shared. 75 splits the town in half, but unlike Mckinney there is little stigma to living on the eastside or in one of the few non mc mansion homes on the westside. Allen is more comfortable in its skin and doesn't try as hard as Mckinney to get noticed. It's more of a hidden gem that is a 2nd move location after arriving in Collin County. You land in Mckinney, Frisco or Plano as default relo-villes. But, once your here you wish you would have started in Allen. Allen really has grown up to still feel like a small town that you can live happily in cradle to grave. Allen is more evenly highly educated and ethnically diverse community that interacts across lines. Mckinney is more defined by the location, income and the subdivision you belong to. ... more

As a life long NYC area resident and retired realtor, you need to visit the following:

East side of the Hudson River:

northern Westchester County (above I-287 - Cross Westchester Expressway / Westchester Ave.). Visit towns like Cortlandt, Mount Kisco, Yorktown, Bedford and Somers.

Putnam County - anywhere will fit your criteria. You MUST visit Clarence Fahnstock State Park - you will LOVE it!!!

Suffolk County (Long Island) - stick to the border towns with Nassau County to shorten the commute to Manhattan. You will love spending time along the Atlantic Ocean beaches!

West side of the Hudson River:

Rockland County - anywhere fits your criteria. Avoid the towns of Monsey & Spring Valley mainly due to the large Hasidic Jewish population and they control the public schools. The rest of Rockland is great.

New Jersey - not that knowledgeable so you will need to search on your own. Research income taxes as this may affect you.

Property taxes - the bad news. Get ready for sticker shock. The high tax amounts is to pay for the great school districts and residents vote on school budgets every year.

Good Luck!

Have you thought about Texas? Teaching positions are known to be great, and great paying. Assume law enforcement positions also available, given the large cities and sprawling suburbs..

Florida is popular but less economic activity.. Many young professionals request moving estimate for Texas!

Probably best to consult with a realtor in Canada. I guess if it doesn't show future landlord can still ask for past references.

Round Rock fired three KKK policemen and convicted a judge a few years ago. They pull over more people for "no reason" than Austin. Bon voyage.

Depends what you are looking for. I went to high school in St. Cloud back when I could ride my horse throughout the town (1970's). Coming from NYC I would guess this would be country living to you. If I has moving to this area I would look at Harmony, FL. I live in Kissimmee and lifetime Floridian. Retiring in 9 months and moving to Georgia. Too many people here now for my liking. Best of luck to you and your move! ... more
