If you are a Vet or a senior citizen you can apply. Be sure to apply to both Nassau, Town of Hempstead and the Village of Freeport. Each must be filed separately. You can contact the appropriate municipalities to find out when to file.

You may also file for a tax adjustment since values have gone down substantially, therefore, assessments should be lower.

I doubt that! When you live in a community, ALL residents that own a home/property are required to pay school taxes. If we had a hospital we'd be paying toward that, etc. For example, you may not have a recreation card but you can be sure that some of your taxes go to that facility as well. ... more

It would depend on how far south you are. During Superstorm Sandy the water came up to Archer St. which was a first and I've been in Freeport since 1965. Anyone south of Atlantic Ave would be affected and would be required to have flood insurance if they have a mortgage.

Please note that flood insurance doesn't cover contents in a basement. Traditionally only the boilder and HW heater would be covered. You can check your policy to see if there's coverage for your washer and dryer. During Sandy my circuit breaker boxes were under the water so they would be covered for this damage as well on my policy.

It's never to early to educate yourself about the process and begin preparations. Getting a look at your credit report is the first order of business. You never know what surprises may be lurking there. If you need to make corrections or pay off debts, now is a good time to start. (You can get a free credit report from each of the three reporting agencies online at MyCreditReport.com.) About 6 monthe before you want to move, I will be happy to recommend a reliable lender to pre-approve you.

Now is a good time to start looking up homes online and starting narrowing down your criteria on things such as style and location so when you are ready to look in earnest you won't waste a lot of time looking at homes that don't meet your needs. There are many good websites for this purpose but, of course, the one I recommend is ReMax.com.
