It's not one of the popular neighborhoods in Austin but we like it. My husband and I could pay for a much smaller home in central Austin but really like the space we can get in this neighborhood. We moved here in 2007 and then moved down the street in the same neighborhood to a bigger home a few years later. Harris Branch has really improved and our house has already appreciated almost $100,000 in 2 years. The landfill is the main reason that people steer away from this neighborhood but it really does not bother us. They already closed one of them down and the other will be permanently closed in a few years. The foundation does shift here but we found that this was less of an issue with older homes. We had engineers check out our foundation, and they said the shifting is normal and fine. If your home is newer, you need to water the foundation. Round Rock (North suburb of Austin) has some of the lowest tax rates so that could save you extra money in the monthly payments. Leander (North West Suburb) has some of the highest rated schools and much cheaper/newer than North Austin. Manor ( East Suburb) is up and coming! SO MUCH has been built out there, it much more attractive to renters.
Multi Family Properties are something to think about, think DUPLEXES.

In Austin's city is moderately hard at 6-8 grains per gallon. But in the Austin Colony area the water is catastrophically hard at around 20 grains per gallon. If you are within that area, you will definitely need to take some preventive measures to deal with limestone issues in your property water system. I solved my problem with a German made electronic anti-scaler. Water in Round Rock TX has a hardness of 11 grains per gallon average, which is considered hard according to USGS standards. Hard water scale in pipes will surely occur in the long run, but problems with your sprinkler valves due to calcium scale are absolutely common in this area mainly because of high evaporation in the outdoor summer heat. Hard water will also cause common ice maker and dish washer related issues. I always say preventive maintenance is an owners choice. I personally dislike dealing with calcium deposits around my faucets, showers and sinks, but above all, the thing I dislike the most is the slippery feeling in your body, after taking a hard earned shower, at the end of the day with softened water. Its like washing yourself with sea water. The sodium added to the water just wont allow proper soap rinsing and you never get to feel really clean. My house came with a huge Salt Water Softener, with two big tanks that took a lot of space in my garage which is not huge. After a long research, I decided to replace our salt softener with a Vulcan-Texas Anti-Scaler from Techno Mechanical Solutions in Austin. An affordable and eco-friendly way to prevent hard water issues without using salts. I was able to do the installation myself over the old softener pipes. The Vulcan requires no maintenance, just install and forget about it. No more salt buying trips to Lowes and carrying those back breaking bags. No more slippery feeling after taking a shower. Austin is a great city with many wonderful neighborhoods with good schools. Of course, it depends on your budget since some areas are more expensive than others. Are you planning to rent or buy a home? I would be glad to help you whether you buy or rent. Some surrounding cities, like Cedar Park, Leander, Round Rock have great schools and family oriented neighborhoods.

I think this really has to be something you decide for yourself. If you'll be in the house for a while there's a good chance that anything you do now won't have a huge impact on the sale when you decide to sell. I would say adding a bathroom would help you the most in a long-term sense. If you'll be there for a while and don't need another bathroom though, you can worry about that later. Really your first priority should be something that you will like and will make your life easier.

The best approach would be to sit down with an agent to discuss all your needs, timing, budget, expectations, and go over the entire buying process. The sit down meeting is a key part to the buying process as it can be a stressful time if your needs/concerns are not being met.

The Hancock Park neighborhood is very close to there and is an excellent area. So is University Hills.

There are many safe areas in Austin. I was born and raised here myself and know the city very well. Some great zip codes to look into are 78704, 78702 (most areas are excellent and close to downtown), 78722, 78745. Those are all good areas and it just depends what your budget is and how close to downtown you want to be.

Do you know where you will be working yet? As being closer to work is probably a priority too.
