Michelle, I just saw this thread, and lincolnparker's suggestion about living in the Oregon District. I lived in Dayton for many years, and while the Oregon District was a nice place to visit, I would not recommend living there, unless you can ride a bike to school or to work -- parking is practically non-existent, not only on Fifth Street, but on the surrounding neighborhood streets too. Yes, it's fairly close to UD and some might consider it "trendy", but while that area seemed to have so much promise, it never did flourish. To me, it was "seedy", with a lot of empty store fronts, and a lot of bars. It was an OK place to have lunch once in a while, but IMO, you'll be much safer living South and East of UD, in communities like Kettering, Oakwood, or even farther out in Beavercreek or Centerville.
