I know this post is older but I thought I'd chime in anyway. Northeast Downey is pretty exclusive. I used to live there and I hated to sell my house. Anyway, it's a great place to live and raise children. If you need an expert on the area ask some realtors around the area. They will know the neighborhoods the best. I'd suggest Gabriel Reyes at 24 hour realty. He sold my house within 30 days. I'm sure he can be of some help. ... more

Its an inner city neighborhood. I live in the "low" crime area near victory memorial parkway and my car has been broken into 3 times and my girlfriends car was broken into twice. If you want completely safe, move out of the city. City lifestyle comes with its baggage. Something we have to live with. Vote for a politician with a larger more aggressive police presence policy, figure out a way to deal with it on your own, or live far enough outside Minneapolis. As far as personal safety, I recommend buying a gun and taking some courses on how and when to use it properly and effectively. Don't be the victim. ... more

I wish it was easier to get a grasp on the crime in any particular area. There are web-sites that reportedly provide buyers or renters useful crime stats. The problem most of the data is several years old and not a indication of current crime. Comment sections are not a good indication either. There are people who hate everything or people who do not want you to move next door to them. They exaggerate or paint a picture that is not true. As a Realtor/Broker the fines and loss of career are too steep a price to pay for stepping over the lines. You must understand we work in a industry that the mere interpretation of words can be used to fine you thousands of dollars or completely take away your ability to make a living. Finding relevant information is not easy and there is not one place you can get what you are looking for. Police blotters are easily accessed in my area. Another method is the state police posts sexual predators residences. I provide links to find the information and the same can be said of schools. In the end that is all I can do. ... more

John Burke answered:
Hi Sandra,

Are you planning on using your fiance's VA entitlement to buy your new home with a no money down VA mortgage? Are you planning on being on the mortgage with him? If so there are couple of things that you need to discuss with lender (like me) before you apply for your pre-approval.

Most agents will request a pre-approval letter from you before they'll invest too much of their time working with you.

Take a look at the recommendations from some of my past clients on my Trulia profile by clicking the link below my phone number.

Please feel free to contact me for more information or help.

Not much else you can do other than A. Move or B. Make sure you have insurance and it covers everything in your apartment. . There's not much else that can be done, if it's an apartment that allows smoking, then she has much a right to be there as you. If anything you can ask her to quit, but if she doesn't care then she doesn't care and will continue to. If it's such a concern to you then you should probably just move to a different apartment. ... more

Also, you can check the city’s police department website – they often report more detailed crime rate information.
