Posted by a parent on 3/20/2024Hello, I am a 7th grader that unfortunately attends this school. The teachers don’t care about your kids. The kids there vape, smoke, have sex, cuss teachers out, they just don’t care. I was shocked because I came from Hutchinson Elementary which was AMAZING. Here, they don’t even have a STEM Club. If a kid walks out of class, all the principal does is send them back. They pretend like they care. We are the 2nd lowest ranking school in the district. I’m in PRE AP and there’s kids in my classes scoring 37’s and 20’s. In the regular classes, they don’t even know the difference between their, there, and they’re. Send your kid literally ANYWHERE ELSE. I DONT CARE IF YOU HAVE TO DRIVE 40 MINUTES, LITERALLY ANYWHERE ELSE.
Posted by a student on 1/7/2024I moved here from Houston to get away from the horrible schools, just to find my kids are learning more about getting high than learning. I have contacted the school and left messages, even text the principal's phone with concerns about vapes with no response. 1 teacher might care out of their entire class schedule. There is absolutely no consequences for tardy, or actions of students, UNLESS THE SCHOOL SEES IT AS A PROBLEM! The elementary is Great, middle school is okay, but Jr high, almost the most important SUCKS! Coaches use to care and any athlete used to be able to straighten their players right out. Now, Kids do not even care. Teachers seem to be there just to be there with the few who really want to make a difference. The sad thing is, those few are trying to do it alone!
Posted by a parent on 4/8/2022As a girl who’s been to Lamar junior high, Please, PLEASE never send your kid to this horrible. The other students are horrible and mean. The chances of being able to get bullied in that school is 100/100. If you think the school is great, It’s not. Unless you like the sound of getting depressed and bullied for the 2 whole school years. Then this horrible school is for you. Please choose any other type of school but this one. If I had the option to give this school 0 stars I would this horrible place doesn't deserve even a single star. - a 7th grader who’s in this horrible school.
Posted by a parent on 9/15/2021I have older children and this is the absolute worst school I have ever had to deal with as a parent. They don't give homework. The teachers ignore calls and emails but send mass messages to tell you your child is failing or missing work. No in school help. Kids walk around with heavy backpacks all day. The buses run terribly. During this pandemic the kids have been overloading with work. I am looking to move just to get my child out of this school.

5/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageWe moved here from a place where we had our children in a private school. We have been blown away with the quality of the education, the care for students, the positive environment and the enjoyment of our kids at Jane Long. We are so thankful for this school and highly recommend it to others. This school has made historic Richmond a wonderful place to raise our family!Parent Review5y ago - Smith Elementary School

6/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageMy son was sent to this school for his summer school. He was so excited to go to summer school. After, the first day, I ask him how his day went. He told me that "the principal said I am too expensive to be in summer school". I asked him why would the principal say that. His response was "I don't know, may be because I am the only student with a brown face in my class". There was a mix up in his summer school registration and he had to be with the principal for a while that first day, until things were sorted out. To say I was shocked was an understatement. Why a principal would make such statement to a child (he's PreK) baffles me. I followed up with that principal, she apologized and said she couldn't remember saying something like that to him. But he had a very nice experience with his teacher. When I asked about his teacher, he responded "My teacher is really nice and is not like my principal". He didn't want to go to the school the next day until I assured him that he wouldn't be with the principal again. Thankfully, he's not a regular student in that school and I can't wait for him to finish the summer school and leave the schoolParent Review5y ago - Travis Elementary School

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageMy son began attending the school in 2021 for the 6th grade year. The school and it's staff has helped to improve and foster a positive outlook in my son towards school and other adults. They have also aided in strengthening my son's connection with and love for God. I highly recommend this school for a solid foundation in education and Christian values. It coincides with what I'm teaching him at home and our faith practices. I am currently a nurse and was a teacher for ten years in the public education school system before. Go and visit the school for yourself and see how your child's education environment can be challenging and loving at the same time. Yes, my son is still in attendance, 7th grade now. 09/2023Parent Review7mo ago - Shady Oak Christian School

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageFantastic school that has ‘saved’ my child. Shady Oak follows empirically validated literature on what is developmentally appropriate for child learners (unlike public schools which cater to funding$$$, and parochial schools which focus on religion, morals, policies). Excellent school. My child has improved reading dramatically here and is at ease. The environment is inclusive and structured, yet promotes independence. I wish more schools focused on the social/emotional development as much as they do academics. Our kids would be in a much better spot holistically speaking.Parent Review2y ago - Shady Oak Christian School
