My child went to PS16 for the whole trip from PreK to 5th grade. PROS: The staff have all been great, The principal Mrs. Watkins-Williams has been wonderful, the teachers & other staff all have worked hard and are well respected and loved by the kids. The school reflects the area so a great mix of families from all over the world as well as JC locals. The children tend to be well behaved and there to learn and standardized test scores reflect that.CONS: Its over-crowded, classes are regularly at capacity. If you move to the area don't assume you'll get in easily. Lunches are in shifts so you end up having a short lunch at weird times. There is just a small outdoor courtyard. You can't drink the water. Funding cuts are real and many programs have been cut. There are also families moving to the area because of the school's profile and some are very demanding which has changed the neighborhood atmosphere of the past. Finally Academic results are great, but maybe this reflects a strong focus on PARCC testing which makes comparison unfair to many suburban schools. We feel lucky we live in a great neighborhood with an amazing school like this, I hope middle school will be as rewarding!
