Steppingstone school is a school with a high academic demand on their students that is based on 100% mastery. Their curriculum is catered to gifted children. Unfortunately the curriculum itself is somewhat obsolete (e.g. the math book is from 2004). The students are encouraged and expected to be independent learners. They are taught the core of a subject then learn in the process through reading instructions. This is advantageous for kids that have good study habits and that are suited by this learning style. Every child is placed in a grade level according to their skills in every subject. Because grade level advancement is based on mastery this could mean that your child is placed in a lower grade level. Sometimes this will result in a child having to go to the elementary classroom for a subject even though they are officially in a middle school grade level. 1-2 hours of homework and weekend work are probable for most children. They make the most of the relatively small resources they have. They have a great hands-on science program. Art and music are nothing out of the ordinary. The sports curriculum includes fencing and swimming at different times of the year.
