Posted by a parent on 5/3/2023Northwood is an excellent school, despite some people's ideas of it. The teachers and students are very welcoming; I remember my first day of school as a new student I felt accepted. The classes are challenging, but you are able to stay on top of your schoolwork if you pay attention and turn in your work on time. One thing to note is the difference between AP and honors classes vs. standard classes, as the difference is somewhat significant. If you want to challenge yourself, taking harder classes will be a good opportunity for you, and if you take standard classes you may not be challenged. I know that another thing to be aware of is the misconception that AP (and honors) classes are not diverse... However, with experience, I can oppose that and say that they are diverse. You should want to consider joining whichever classes you think you will be most comfortable in regardless of what anyone says about Northwood's equity... This website displays a misconception that has been given to this school about its diversity. (That there are mostly Latino students who take standard classes while most of the students who participate in AP classes are white... not true). They also offer multiple programs like sports and activities, and the teachers and staff there are especially involved with helping the students with their interests.
Posted by a community member on 12/1/2021Northwood has been an amazing school for my son. His experience in the GTLD program has made him love school and helped him be an extremely successful student. The staff has been wonderful and great at communication. I haven't encountered anything that matches the negative picture these statistic paint. I think if someone is considering the school they should go and visit, learn about what it is available, and meet the amazing staff. Judging by these numbers alone is a skewed picture and does a disservice to the school and staff and the wonderful job they are doing.
Posted by a parent on 9/4/2018I think the low test scores at this school are a reflection of the high percentage of students who are English langauge learners. The ESOL program and department, which is very large, is amazing and consists of a team of very hardworking, dedicated professional teachers who give their all every day to help almost 500 English language learners to succeed in school. The other students in the school are also given a variety of activities and programs to help them get a great start in life. Nothwood High School is a great school!
Posted by a teacher on 9/7/2017Northwood is a very nice school. It offers many programs including medical, technology, and law. They say there is many gangs ,but to be honest thats not true. just because this school is located near Langley Park doesnt mean it had a lot of gangs its not a bad school! I am currently a junior I graduate 2014. I recomend this school! I remeber when I was chosing this school they said there was alot of bullying , but theres not, I mean in every school there is but here it depends who you mess with. I remeber my parents were scared to let me come here but in the end they were satisfied and relieved knowing that its not a bad school. I recomend it for any incoming 9th graders. I give this school a 5 star rating.

8/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI want to give honest feedback to one particular first Grade teacher at this school. It has been truly the WORST year for my Son, who is in first grade at this school. One time the school instructed to put all the students on the online classes because of COVID constrain. During this time, we noticed our Son's teacher's teaching style. The teacher is focused ONLY on the kids who are participating actively and on those who like to answer all the questions. She is not making ANY effort on the students who truly needs a little extra help as my child or pushing them to engage in any activity with other classmates. Today, My husband went on a field day activity at my Son's school and watched our child and his teacher from a distance. Our child played with the other kids for several minutes, and then when it was a different activity, he lost interest, stopped playing, and sat on the ground alone. The teacher is standing next to my child and has no motivation to ask him or push him back to the playing field. Our Son disliked his school. Sometimes he refused to go to school as it was no longer his happy place, and it was a war to wake him up from his bed every day! We all know that a positive classroom environment is a primary reason kids want to go to school and enjoy learning. Unfortunately, our child is not lucky enough to experience this. In overall, I don't understand how someone who might not be fit to be a teacher gets the credentials and a teaching position!! The lady got no interest in Children who needed a little extra help; when I say extra help, I am not saying help for a special child—helping a child who learns in different ways and paces! I wondered if the school evaluates the teachers and takes necessary actions. Just because she refused to provide him additional support and could not accommodate him in her classroom, our Son has been affected for the entire year! I will avoid this teacher AT ANY COST!!!Parent Review1y ago - Glen Haven Elementary School

4/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageMy son w/ IEP and 1 on 1 aide is in homeschool program at Glen Haven. He is able to participate with ease thanks to the amazing support he gets from the school. We feel welcomed, a sense of belonging to the school environment. He is improving in math and improved his grades compared to the previous Learning Center he was attending. This says a lot because Learning Center curriculum is easier and more broken down for kiddos like mine.Parent Review3mo ago - Kemp Mill Elementary School

4/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI have been really happy with my experience at Arcola Elementary. I've been very pleased to see how aware the school is of families' differing economic constraints and the efforts made to ensure all students have access to resources. For example, last year all students received a backpack with school supplies. This ensured that students had the materials they needed for a successful year, without drawing attention to which students had more need than others. I'm also excited to see how the PTA has grown this past year, particularly its impressive fundraising efforts. They were able to fund a lot of great programs and activities that benefited the children's learning. Also important-- the teachers are great! I really appreciate the communication I received from my daughter's teacher. Whenever I reached out with a question, I always received a prompt reply. Finally, I'm thrilled with the great introduction to learning my child received this past year. My child's reading and math skills have improved significantly this past year, and I can't wait to see what she learns in 1st grade.Parent Review9mo ago - St Andrew Apostle School

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI hate to write a bad review because when I came to this school I had high hopes. I starting at this school in 2021. The first year was fine during virtual learning .The second year things started to go downhill. They sat with me to tell me they thinkmy child should get tested. Not really much other info so I went to a pediatrician where the school and his doctor suggested to go to child find.I went immediately and got him tested they said he would not be eligible to get an IEP.So then I went to child link a few months later but because the school was not responsive fast enough I lost that opportunity because he aged out. So over the summer of 2022 I tried getting private help, but everyplace that was suggested to me by friends, county or pediatrician. They had a waiting list 6 months to a 1 1/2 years or not taking new patients. So now the new year has started. And very quickly the complaints started about my child. I felt like the school was very much against me and treating my child like an outsider and it definitely started to show. Every complaint they had of my child I took seriously .While the principal kept giving me very vague answers and saying we don’t know how to help your child if we don’t know what he has. So at this point the school is telling me I need a diagnosis. So I tried calling childrens and Kennedy krieger. Both had waiting lists for more than a year. All the while , I started noticing my son was showing signs of stress and anxiety. It was heartbreaking. I tried reassuring him tried giving him encouraging talks about what was going on. Finally I decided to go back to the county after begging them to please take on my child application for an iep for the 3rd time. They decided to proceed with the testing. I was finally told that my child had adhd with some attributes of autism. So finally I was relieved to get an answer and thought the school would be happy that he got a diagnosis. After all that’s what they wanted. So after I notified the principal of the report all she sent back to me was“ Thanks.Yes, I would like the reports.I want to help you find the best placement for him based on what they say his needs are. “ which I thought she meant was find the right placement at her school “very vague. Turns out she meant that he can’t come to school next year .This was 2 wks before school started.the principal said is was because his diagnosis.I asked for a letter of denial they conveniently left out the reason. ThePrincipal ghosted me. SmhParent Review7mo ago - Kemp Mill Montessori School Kehillat Montessori
