My two daughters have been attending this school for the past 2 years. They love the school and the teachers. Teaches are very caring and helpful. I have a great respect for the principle as she goes out of her way to improve things. There is always something going on in the school. The principle invites interesting people and looks for ways to make the learning fun for the kids. The PTO is very active and thanks to that my kids had 3 field trips (each) last year. The parking is bad, but I would not lower the rating because of that. It has nothing to do with the quality of education. It's just the result of people's ignorance because they just do not think about others. The curriculum is not challenging but again it is the state and city who decide about that not the school. We live in a different school district and have to apply every year to attend Center school, but it is worth the time and effort.Posted by a parent on 1/3/2012

My daughter has been going here for 3 years and it's been up and down. The teachers she's had have been pretty good, they all seem very caring. I can't speak for the new principal just yet but the one time I've met her she seemed very nice. The school desperately needs an overhaul though, except for the windows and playground. Everything looks very old and worn out. The worst part of this school (and the reason I gave it 3 stars) is the drop-off/pick-up situation. It is absolutely nightmarish! The school is located on a narrow side street, and people (most who own SUV or mini-vans) park on both sides, making it almost impossible for anyone else to drive down the street. With all the kids getting out, and people trying to pass and/or block traffic, it's utter pandemonium every day at 3 pm. I tried it one year and hated it so much that I've been paying for busing ever since. I don't know what they could do to remedy the situation, but it needs to be fixed. I'm surprised there's hasn't been any accidents or no one has been hit by a car yet.Posted by a parent on 4/6/2011

5/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageBoth my children attend this school. The teachers are great! They work well with both my children. The school has worked great with my son who has a disorder they have made many accomidations for him to feel comfortable. The only thing is they spend all that time going over the bullying rules and making sure the students understand them but I think the parents are the ones who should be taught righ from wrong. If you attend this school it is wonderful in so many ways just dont pick your kids up in the back talk about high school all over again.Parent Review9y ago

5/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI was skeptical about sending my child to this school, but I'm glad I did. I think its one of the best grade schools in Lynn. The principal is very involved and doesn't just hide in her office, she's leading from the front! Another thing I really like is the diversity and PTO. I would have rated it 5 stars, but the facility is a bit run down with leaks during winter/rainy periods. Overall tho, my daughter is very excited to go to school everyday and she tells me she enjoys coming to this school.Parent Review6y ago

4/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageCarlton School is currently being run by a principal who, in the name of high-stakes testing, gives up on quality teaching in order to teach to the test. Open responses all day before the ELA MCAS? You betcha. Extra hour of math leading up to the Math MCAS? Yep. I have watched my child change drastically this year, and not for the better.Parent Review7y ago

5/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI have so much respect and admiration for the teachers, counselors, and staff at Bates. We had an amazing first year and were so pleasantly surprised, given the bad press Salem has received in the past. Mr. M is an incredible principal and impresses me every day with his love for his work and his love for those kids. He's going to take that school to even greater places!Parent Review4y ago
