Read what parents are saying about Johnson STEAM Academy SchoolThis school rates 10/10. The changes in our student have been phenomenal. He's gone from being a troublemaker to an engaged student who is helpful, caring, and talented.

Posted by a parent on 4/25/2018I moved from Iowa City to Cedar Rapids in January 2016. The Iowa City school scored fairly well in this category and I am shocked to see people reviewing this school poorly. Johnson Steam Academy is a lifesaver for my first grader. The teachers care deeply about each student and looks out for all of the children above and beyond what the Iowa City school did. The curriculum and presentation of materials involves the children and requires that they actively participate in a way that helps them learn. Not every child learns the traditional methods taught these days and I am glad my daughter goes to this school because she needs extra support. Even if I have to get a second job to pay rent, I will not move away from this school until she is in middle school. It is that good!
Posted by a parent on 3/15/2016It's sad to see the review below because the college student was reviewed poorly by the teacher because of her lack of attendance and commitment to her practicum, and shortly after, wrote the bad review of our school. I guess as some type of angry payback. Johnson Elementary is full of amazing students and dedicated staff. Staff who care deeply about the students and go above and beyond for them. You can feel the loving environment and sense of community when you walk through the door. I've never worked at a school like this before, and I plan on spending many years teaching at this outstanding school.
Posted by a teacher on 4/2/2015I'm really sorry to have to write a review like this but it's for the children so I have to. I'm a college student majoring in elementary education; I worked with a third grade class last semester and it was like a prison for these kids. There's a reason this school's test scores are so low and it's not the children (who are wonderful I might add). I don't want to speak of all the staff but some of them, especially the teacher I worked with, are extremely disrespectful to the students. For example, I attempted to approach a teacher about a student who was suffering from a very rough home life and she completely disregarded my concern saying "he's (the student) just crazy." Later I learned that the child's family had left the state in an attempt to flee DHS. The students were never allowed to talk, not even to ask me a question or they'd suffer the consequences. If they were not standing up straight by the door when asking to use the restroom they were unable to go... etc etc. Johnson Elementary needs serious reform! I will never work in this school nor would I ever send my children to this school. Good luck everyone.

1/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageMy son has had both good and bad experiences at this school. The bad, however, outweighs the good. He has wet his pants when a teacher refused to let him go to the restroom. He has been bullied. He hasn't learned anything this school year because the teacher has no control over his classroom. I've spoken with the new principal about moving my son to a different teacher this year and was told no. The principal is new as of last month so is unaware of the plans and actions previously in place to help this teacher and because he hasn't been involved, he basically wants to start from scratch. I'm all for the teacher learning and growing but my son is not being provided the same opportunity. I will be moving my son to a different school.Parent Review4mo ago - Wright Elementary School

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageThis school is like the cup in Matthew 23:25 that has been washed on the outside but is completely rotten on the inside. I would say a lot more, but the Yelp review for this school explains it pretty well, so I will try to give a brief summary. The administration is incompetent and deceptive, the curricula are obsolete, and the students are rude and cliquey and just as duplicitous as the administrators. Grade inflation is rampant, and students regularly receive high marks for mediocre work - I once saw a classmate who submitted an essay about Margaret Thatcher inventing abortion in the early 1900s later go on to graduate with the highest honors despite openly cheating on final exams. Continuing on that thread, the school has a major cheating problem that the administration refuses to acknowledge despite being warned about it multiple times. To their credit, the teachers are very competent and work as well as they can with the fundamentalist gay-bashing young-earth creationist curricula they are forced to use. Reading between the lines, it’s clear that many of them have been compelled to dumb down their classes to accommodate the lazier students that the administration favors. Do not be fooled by buzzwords like 'Christlike character' and 'academic excellence' - if you pay attention for long, you will start to see through this school very quickly. I would strongly recommend online Christian schools like Scholé Academy or HSLDA for a better educational experience.Other Review8mo ago - St Matthew School
