Extreme cliques with parents. You must be the child of an "it" parent or PTA member, or of course the administrations child to be acknowledged for anything. I proved it. 8 years at the school and one year serving on the PTA. One child received an award the year I was on PTA only. The others never even a single good job from anyone. All others are quite literally seen and treated as beneath them. The communication is horrible. And I absolutely mean horrible. We pray every night to survive this school. A piece of advice for parents sending their children to OPES, if you push back or question any decision the administration or personnel make regarding your child, you need to prepare yourselves and your child for unfair, unkind, and downright disgraceful treatment.

I just love all the teachers. They listen to your concerns and genuinely care. I have 3 children there and every year I am impressed with the teachers.

What a Great School! The teachers are excellent and the staff is wonderful. I have put my two children in this school and what a great experience. I wish we had not had to move a 1000 miles away. Although my oldest graduated from Oglethorpe, and on to Glynn Middle, both my children earned a great education and wonderful memories. The area has a lot of history. This contributes to the great learning experience. My older son still loves history and archeology, spurred on by the "Big Dig" the school promoted at Fort Frederica. (est. in 1736 by James Oglethorpe, now a National Monument across the street from the school, and its' name sake.) My youngest son is still interested in marine biology, which started with a trip just down the road to the Jekyll Island Turtle Aquatic center. The people in the area are very friendly, not intimidating or exclusionary. One visit to the area and you will find a place that you will want to raise a family and make your new home. Parents are communicated with daily through the "DAN" daily agenda that must be read and signed by the parent daily. Teachers and Staff are always available for the students and parents. PTA is the best ever.

I graduated from OPES in 2010 and now I attend a private school. I started at OPES in the third grade and was excited to attend this "amazing" school. Little did I know that the school was filled with cliques and disruptive students in every classroom. I had heard that the teaching was "exceptional." I learned no spelling or vocabulary, I left the school not even knowing how to spell "vocabulary!" We had Social Studies for only a few weeks out of the whole year! I learned NO reading or writing skills what so ever which hurt me when I started middle school. If your parent is "important" to OPES then you will get by fine, if not..... good luck. I had a few good teachers (3 to be exact). THE WHOLE YEAR I spent preparing for the CRCT. There was no emphasis on other learning at all! This school is way over-rated...it is not a school of "excellence." Three phrases that describe this school... full of parent and student cliques, ONLY prepares for CRCT, and WAY over-rated.
