Read what parents are saying about Sunny Brae Avenue Elementary SchoolSomeone needs to look into their support for IEP's. My son was there for 1st-3rd grade and his test scores suffered because they refused to assess him for an IEP or even offer assistance until I had to investigate what was going on with him. Later in his 3rd grade year they decided to claim to start the assessment. I decided waiting until 4th grade and dealing with the horrible staff wasn't worth it. WE also had problems with hackers at while attending Sunnybrae in Winnetka. They would get inside some language programming and algorithms and dictate his online scores and or spelling etc. When we brought this to their attention their attention, they were dismissive and so was the school board.
Posted by a parent on 8/24/2023Worst school that I've ever seen. So much racial discrimination and lack of safety from staff and school management. If you love your child - stay away from this place!
Posted by a parent on 5/23/2017The first few years it was excellent. Just like any business that gets sold etc. and the customer sees an "under new management" sign- the place is never the same and business dwindles. The same applies here- my students are moving to a new school. Poor management.

Posted by a community member on 8/5/2016Sunny Brae is a great school. I have a child in 5th grade and one in 2nd and both of my kids have very dedicated, caring, and inspiring teachers. My son's 5th grade teacher is knew this year and he has really stepped up and is doing really well. She treats the kids with respect and always wants their best. My daughters 2nd grade teacher is always there for our family and cares so much for the kids. I am glad that I am part of the Sunny Brae family and I wish I would've had my kids here earlier.

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageOur child has been attending preschool here, though only because our resident school (LAUSD assigned school) is a very low-performing, bottom-of-the-barrel type school and we are still playing the lottery for the better charter schools in our area. I have to say that nearly all the preschool teachers, are warm, welcoming, and seem to truly enjoy what they do. The grounds are very secure and there are always private security guards waling the grounds, the school is well organized and drop-off/pick-up, even if super busy, is always very smooth. However, as some reviewers have noted, the school is very expensive and all afterschool enrichment classes you have to pay for (though this is true for public schools as well). All private preschools in the same tuition range offer an 8AM-5PM/5:30PM day, but this school has decided that their cut off is 3:00PM and if you want extended hours you have to pay an additional fee. I also find it odd that the parents have to contribute $200+ (as of 2023) per child each year towards a gift fund for the child's teachers and the principle. It seems like we are bribing them with gifts to guarantee that they are "kind" to our children. However, my bigger issue is the lack of rigorous academic curriculum AND blatant discrimination against children with a disability. As another reviewer noted, they adhere to the CA standards (because they have to) and that's it. History is thought through a Western and colonial lens, indigenous peoples and their achievements are largely ignored; world history focuses on the West and Asia, starting around 8000 BC, so hundreds of thousands of years of human history are not even touched on and Africa (minus Egypt) get left out of World History. And this is what I got from a short conversation with the curriculum development director. As someone who teaches at a Tier 1 research university in the US, their academic shortcomings and prejudice are obvious; not a place where I would allow my children to continue their education.Parent Review6mo ago
