Read what parents are saying about Town School For BoysThere has been research that boys learn better in a co-ed environment. Town has its plusses, but many of them are social for the families and connections for the grads. If a boy is a different learner or doesn't conform, this school has the potential to be a nightmare.
Posted by a community member on 4/24/2023Full disclosure I am married to a Town alum and now our son attends Town. When we decided to send our son to a private school we toured and applied to 6 located in Marin and SF. We were accepted at all, so our decision to attend Town was not for lack of options. My son is vastly different from my husband (think quiet/art/legos vs outgoing/sports) and I felt that my husband loving his Town experience probably meant it was not going to be a great fit for our son, but I agreed to tour the school. I was blown away. The "lord of the flies" culture that a below reviewer mentions was very much what my husband's school experience was like 25+ years ago and for boys who did not excel in sports, they probably do not hold great memories from that era. However, that is not the Town of today. The curriculum, focus on social-emotional learning & inclusion and culture is incredible and it's tailored specifically to boys! Boys and girls learn differently, we know this, and Town meets the boys where they are. A boy falls down, another boy (not girl) is helping him up, asking if he's ok. An older boy is guiding/helping a younger boy in assembly. The boys are talking about their emotions to a group of boys, learning together with their peers that expressing emotions and being vulnerable is encouraged and accepted. I also love that women hold most of the leadership positions at the school, so these boys see women in positions of authority on a daily basis. I stand completely corrected on what my original bias/opinions of Town were. The Town of today is a very special place that we are fortunate and excited to be a part of with our son who loves going to school and telling us about his day.
Posted by a parent on 10/27/2022Please consider your choice very carefully, unfortunately we had a terrible experience at this school. Agree with the review below that apparently keeps disappearing. This is an incredibly superficial environment grossly unequipped to meet today’s moment for children, boys especially. There is a complete lack of understanding of differentiation for a challenging environment, it is rather a focus on demanding, not challenging. Would hate for anyone to experience what we did, there are lots of other choices for your child - do your research.
Posted by a parent on 7/26/2022I can not say enough positive things about Town School for Boys! My son is a fifth grader and has been there since kindergarten. We find the community to be strong and inclusive, and the engaged and dedicated faculty. For an all-boys school we are impressed with the focus on social emotional learning, core values and the arts (including the incredible new Dolby Family Canter for the Performing Arts). My son loves a variety of activities and feels supported by his peers whether it’s running cross country, participating on the math team, or supporting his extra-curricular dance training. The boys are as likely to be found curled up with a book in the library during recess as they are playing touch football. We truly believe there is a spot for all boys at Town to grow and learn in a joyful environment.
Posted by a parent on 10/19/2021I have two sons at Town School, and I could not be happier with the education that they are receiving. They are very different from one another, and both sprint up the steps every day and can't wait to get to school. The school is guided by Head of School Lorri Durbin, who is in her 5th year at Town. Under her leadership, the school has adopted 5 core values (joy, integrity, curiosity, respect, and belonging) that are woven through all aspects of community life and curriculum. The Strategic Plan adopted 2 years ago serves as a blue print for guiding the direction of the school, and quite a bit of progress has already been made -- despite covid. In lower school, the foundational concepts around literacy, math, and community building are taught by experienced, skilled, and kind educators. They manage to seamlessly support both the boys who need it and to challenge the boys who can go further (and my sons fall into both categories) while still cultivating a sense of robust community within the grade. Classes in theater arts, art, library, music, social emotional learning, STEM (a favorite), gardening, and outdoor ed round out an impressive program that the boys are fully engaged in all day. And as a working parent, I love and rely heavily on the Extended Day program, which the boys LOVE, and means that I can pick them up later in the day (and it's drop in, so that as plans change I'm not panicked about pick up times). I was a bit hesitant about boys' school (vs girls' school) -- and now deeply appreciate the fact that boys take up all the space at Town. They throw themselves into drama, dance, art, sewing, STEM, math, reading, and writing. That's been hugely valuable for my boys, who may shy off of an activity if they think they aren't "as good" as the girls/their sister.

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI am a parent of 2 current SVDP students. We are happy with the academics, extracurricular activities, parent community, value, teachers, and administration. The school both challenges and supports it’s students. The school did a fantastic job with in-person learning during COVID and has successfully navigated the 2021/2022 school year.Parent Review1y ago - San Francisco Waldorf School

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageMy two children attended SFWS Grade School K-8. They were well prepared for High School and beyond (now successful in college). I credit the school for a large part of my children's success. The key factors were the individual attention they received from every teacher, the experiential and practical curriculum they absorbed, and the social/emotional support they received from teachers, fellow students and other families in the community. I recommend this grade school to all my friends with children.Parent Review1y ago - Hamlin, The

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageWe LOVE Hillwood. Everything about it -- and that's saying something given that we drive there from the Peninsula. Our daughter transferred at the end of her second grade year after shadowing for 2 days. Initially, we hadn't planed to pull her from her current private school and were weighing options for her 3rd grade year as her brother is attending a school in the city. She loved it so much that when Hillwood offered her the opportunity to start right away she begged us to let her do so. And here's the best part -- she chose to switch immediately because she felt challenged. She was getting bored in her other school and the great thing about Hillwood being so small is that every child is seen, heard and valued. The intimate setting allows for every child to progress at their own pace academically -- and Mrs. Gayle Grantz who runs the school with her husband is THE best teacher ever. Firm, structured, loving and kind. Our daughter's math proficiency has doubled in her short time at Hillwood as well as her reading abilities and passion for writing. She also loves soccer on Monday afternoons post school that they offer as well as the friends she has made across the grades. 2-4 grades are in one class and they regularly interact with the lower school little ones as well as the upper school kids that have matriculated. As a professor, as a parent, our most important goal for our kids to to build a foundation and a noy for learning. Hillwood is an exceptional place to do that within a family like atmosphere. And the Grantz home on Scott street which houses the school is so cozy, you just feel at home there. Mrs. Grantz also makes -- in my 8 yo's words 'THE BEST SOUP & HOT LUNCHES EVER'. Mrs. Grantz does indeed cook hot lunches every day and again that is just part of the Hillwood magic. If you are on the fence and still searching, highly encourage you to shadow at Hillwood and give Gayle a call to see if it might be a fit for your family.Parent Review1y ago
