I believe there are only two highly gifted magnets at this grade level in LAUSD, so the options are limited if you want to get your child into this track. Ultimately, it was a mixed bag. On the positive side, my child wasn't nearly as bored any more, which was the case at their previous (non-gifted) LAUSD school. But the curriculum here was weighted far too heavily on math. Math comprised easily 80-90% of the homework each night, while more traditional subjects, particularly anything related to the arts, were virtually non-existent. It was by no means a well-rounded program. I think the teachers, while well-meaning, sometimes resorted to demeaning and making fun of the children as well (a common refrain when speaking with other parents) which I found incredibly frustrating. If I had to do it again, I probably would have had my child attend a gifted program at another school.

My child has been a student at San Jose HGM for two years. We are so grateful to have learned about this program and to be a part of this community. The teachers are truly dedicated to challenging the students and extending their learning experiences by providing an enriched education in which they learn by doing and experiencing. The field trips and enrichment classes provided by our Booster Club (LA Philharmonic, Skirball museum, Santa Monica aquarium, Valley Performing Arts Center, Yoga, Sign Language, just to name a few) enhance the classroom learning far beyond any other public or private school that we know of. Any student who qualifies for this program should definitely take advantage of a unique learning opportunity that will have them academically, socially and emotionally prepared for their future school experiences.

The school, the teachers, and the program are amazing! My son was previously at Lanai Road Elementary School, which is a Great Schools "10" school, but he was bored, unchallenged and felt out of place. The population was very high achieving, but it was difficult for him to be himself and make meaningful relationships. As soon as he started San Jose it was like a light bulb turned on. His teacher really understands him and his amazing gifts, and knows how to get the best out of each student. The curriculum is challenging enough to keep him interested but not so difficult as to burn him out. I see tremendous growth every week! The magnet booster club pays for so many great field trips and activities that other LAUSD schools simply never get to do. The drive to get from Encino to Mission Hills is worth it!

Teacher quality could be improved esp. at the Magnet. Two new teachers. Until 5th grade you won't get an experienced hg teacher.

My daughter spent 4th-5th at San Jose HG. She arrived as a wicked smart, hard working but quiet girl. After two years she has blossomed into a confident, outspoken young lady who cares about others and believes in herself. This schools is amazing. The principal, Mrs. Johnson, is outstanding and the teachers are incredible - creating an open, creative and structured school where the teachers can be their best, the children feel supported and the parents are heard. When we went for a tour I knew instantly that this was a very special educational setting and felt sad that I hadn't found it sooner. The teachers respect, trust and empower the students in ways I had only dreamed of - this is truly individualized learning that teaches the whole child - it was the education I had always hoped my child would receive. I wish more schools were like this - this type of teaching and administrative support is needed for kids who are not HG too. San Jose HG is by far the best school in LA - superior academics wrapped in social, emotional, community and leadership development. Thank you San Jose for giving our daughter a strong foundation that she can fly anywhere from.
