Read what parents are saying about Westside Neighborhood SchoolWe have 4 kids. Two have graduated from WNS and the other two are in 6th grade at WNS. We have been proud of the school and what it's done to help develop our kids for the future. The growth mindset is a key theme of the school and is part of the DNA . The teachers are fantastic and are there to address any needs or concerns you might have as a parent. As a parent of twin boys that are in 6th grade, the transition into middle school can be tough but the teachers recognize this and help them navigate through these moments. WNS does a great job in building a child's confidence and fostering a nurturing environment that allows them to excel. I highly recommend WNS for your child.
Posted by a parent on 3/19/2024We are grateful that we chose a school that truly values diversity. Our daughter thrived at WNS and feels very prepared for high school and beyond! The teachers, staff, and administrators are wonderful and caring. As a bonus, we’ve made many friends for life and will always be a part of the amazing WNS community!
Posted by a parent on 3/13/2024We have been part of the WNS community for 5 years and cannot rave enough about how great of a fit the school has been for our family. We have a 7th grader at WNS and an 11th grader who attended WNS from 6th-8th grade. We live in Venice and started at our local elementary school and searched for a middle school that had our values - commitment to diversity, academic excellence, growth mindset, kindness, energetic and dedicated teachers and administration, strong sports program, and more. WNS prepared our 11th grade daughter to excel academically in high school while also being committed to her various non-academic passions (volleyball and theater). Our 7th grade son, currently at WNS, is thriving in his classes, having grown in his confidence in the classroom with kind and nurturing teachers. He is also able to feel like a part of the WNS community by participating in the athletic program (flag football and soccer). Choose WNS - your expectations will be exceeded! Go Jets!
Posted by a parent on 12/8/2023This is our fourth year at WNS and we could not be more pleased with our decision to attend this wonderful school. WNS is very successful at providing both a high quality academic program along with a rich and well-integrated social/emotional curriculum. Two of the aspects of WNS we like the most are the differentiated learning approach and the low student to teacher ratio which together ensure that our son gets the time and attention that he needs in each academic subject as well as with his social emotional/ development. The teachers and staff have truly been top notch. Any time I have reached out to his teachers or other staff members with questions or concerns, I always get an almost immediate response that is insightful, thoughtful, and helpful. It is very clear to me that his teachers really know who he is as a person and a learner and are truly invested in his growth and happiness. I also love that the school gives the students lots of opportunities to explore new experiences within a supportive and nurturing environment. The afterschool program is amazing, they offer all kinds of enrichment classes from fencing to cooking, coding to skateboarding. It’s a great way of letting my son try new activities in a familiar environment without having to drive all over LA to get him to the various classes and activities. The community at WNS is also exceptional and we have really enjoyed being a part of it. It is such a talented and diverse community but what really sets it apart in my mind is how down to earth and kind everyone is.
Posted by a parent on 11/30/2023We have two daughters at WNS, one in second grade and one at the preschool and I cannot imagine a more supportive, diverse and loving community. We were deciding between several schools and after visiting WNS in person and speaking to current parents, it was clear that WNS was the right choice for our family--it's hard to imagine that another school like this exists. In addition to the outstanding community, we love the school's approach to reading and math in the early grades, with students being split into six different groups based on their progress. Our older daughter has struggled with reading and this model has given her so much confidence and created a student that loves, rather than dreads, going to school. I also can't speak highly enough of the after-school program, ACE. As a two-parent working household, we feel incredibly grateful that our kids actually WANT to stay after school. WNS is magical and we are immensely grateful to be a part of this community.

7/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageThis is our first year at Playa Del Rey. My son is in Kindergarten and we love his amazing teacher and classroom! He's learned so much and I'm especially impressed with his level of skill in mathematics-which he loves! The staff we have interacted with is kind and approachable. There's a lot of parent involvement and a VERY hardworking parent group (Friends of Playa).Parent Review1y ago - Short Avenue Elementary School

Parent Review1y ago - Braddock Drive Elementary School

8/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageHighly recommend this school! I learned of this school once my child tested gifted in 3rd grade. So we started the GM program in 4th grade and progressed so much academically and emotionally in that first year. At the same time, my younger child started in the Mandarin-immersion program so that I could achieve my dream of having 1 daily dropoff/pickup for a couple years. The students from each program are somehow kept separate as much as possible, but they do mix for afterschool. Both programs that I have experienced have caring, enthusiastic and well-supported teachers. I experienced some random hostility from the 2nd grade magnet teacher/GATE coordinator, but the principal and office staff swiftly addressed and resolved the problem. Parent volunteer support is really high and welcomed by the administration. Teachers are very responsive to parent concerns. It has been an amazing experience all around.Parent Review6mo ago - Cowan Avenue Elementary School

7/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI had two children that went to this school so let me just say please do not let the high test scores fool you! This school is a mess. After COVID teachers were scarce. Classrooms were bonded together with substitutes then they would just up and leave but let’s start with supervision. This school does not only have no support staff to make sure children are safe the kids walk in and out and do whatever they want. There was group vapping in the bathroom. No announcement or anti-drug actions sent home or given to the kids. Children “missing” for an hour on campus. Fighting in the bathrooms and being inappropriate. Teachers with no classroom management so then all the kids are now acting out. The principal might as well be a ghost because your not gonna see him. Social-emotional… nothing special done on the 1st day of school. Nothing special for graduating kids unless parents do it. No anti drug rallies or anti bullying group discussions. The 5th and 6th graders bully the kinders. A mess. All info comes last minute. If your child is going to win an award they do not even tell you. You miss core memories with your child. Main office nobody knows anything except how to mark your kid tardy. School is dirty. Trash all over the place. Lunch time is MESS! And it’s just lunch but so unorganized! Especially for kindergarten. Parent involvement is hard to get because there is no investment made from the school. Parents are not encouraged to help, they are asked to help last minute and then if an event is cancelled they will not even tell you! After buying a ton of uniforms you see it’s not enforced AT ALL! The magnet testing person is rude and discouraged the children publicly. When there is a struggling class they do not know how to manage it and help the children. Staff does not care. Good things- more programs then most schools in the area. Music, chorus, great art teacher, etc. FLI is a great program with good teachers. All the arts are nice and a few teachers care but most are subs or new to teaching. The school is large and has a lot of wasted land. No garden etc.Parent Review8mo ago - Ballona Creek Academy
