Read what parents are saying about Paulo Freire Freedom SchoolHands down the best school we've ever sent any of our children to, including other states.
Posted by a parent on 11/5/2017The students and teachers know one another intimately. They meet several times each week in their little advisory families, and they know that they always have a teacher on their side. They go on about ten field trips each year and spend an additional two weeks on intersessions like backpacking, photography, political theatre, and loads of other brilliant ideas. Some classes are arranged so fourteen or fewer students get to work with one teacher. Many times you will see students working on projects or fun activities, and some teachers almost never use desks. From talking with other parents, I've learned that several of the other students have learning challenges, too, but you would never know it. The special education teacher is brilliant, and there's no stigma among the students about having a disability. The IEP kids aren't pulled out of class, either, unless they ask for one-on-one help. Otherwise, the SPED and regular teachers just work with all the kids in class. My child went from FBB on the AIMS to meeting and exceeding. This school is compassionate, creative, fun, challenging, and works hard for social justice and environmentalism. We are so lucky to have gotten in.
Posted by a parent on 1/24/2012Paulo Freire is a small (est. 70 students) cozy school based in the basement of the old YMCA building (small facilities). Assets include: 1. Caring young teachers and staff, that makes a huge difference especially for middle schoolers. 2. The Leader of the school brings a calm to the school social climate. The kids are well behaved which is remarkable tribute to the staff. 3. The field trips are very interesting. The school is very engaged with the real world. Overall, the leadership and staff are what this school is about and they make it an above average even a very special school. Needs: The school needs a few things to be more balanced and strong. One, consistency with safety when on outings. The staff is not consistent with safety, a little to loose with boundaries. Two, the school is lacking in diversity. Let's give others a chance, especially in a social about social justice. Third, a little too pushy with homosexual and lesbian dogma. Back off, everyone is not gay and everyone does not approve of that lifestyle. Fourth, there's virtually no extracurricular activities. This is not acceptable at all. Parents need to express what we want to see here.

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageSadly, this school put my child with special needs in danger and then completely abandoned her. This was our home district and we were happy to get my children into what we thought was a kind and inclusive school community. The problem at Miles wasn't the teachers, they are caring and creative, the problem is poor resources and ineffective and inflexible administration. The district will try to get out of paying anything they can for students with special needs. I had a letter documenting my child's need for an aide from her developmental pediatrician and they had the data from the school showing she clearly needed 1:1 support but they still would not provide it due to the cost. When my 5 year old got away from her teacher who was in charge of a whole kindergarten class and ran into a busy street they finally recognized that she needed some aide support. That was several months into the year when she had already been endangered by their reckless policies. Then when school went to online only in March 2020 and my 6 year old child with special needs could not learn that way, admin just gave up and refused to educate her. They would not bring her in for tutoring or any services, nothing, even though her special ed teacher recognized that she could not learn online and wanted to teach her in person and felt she could do it safely, admin refused and completely abandoned her. The school has remained shuttered for an entire year now, 12 months, to students who desperately needed in person education, what a travesty, I feel terribly for any students stuck in TUSD who needed in person education and have list out on so much. I am so incredibly thankful we got our kids into CFSD, they are doing an excellent job educating all children safely even during a challenging year and are a much more welcoming and inclusive community!Parent Review3y ago - Davis Bilingual Magnet School

4/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI attended Roskruge as a child and had a great experience so naturally I wanted the same for my daughter but since middles school has begun for her it has been a none stop roller coaster of intimidation, threats and bullying from one male 8th grade student named Ryan Foster. Emails to Superintendants has had little to no results, meetings with the principal ended with a slap on the wrist for the student. Come to find out the student has a uncle on the TUSD board so he is pampered and admin is afraid to discipline him due to this. What happened to the Roskruge I knew as a child this school is falling fast and not worth the drama. My daughter will be leaving after this school year.Parent Review8y ago - First Southern Christian School

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageIn my experience the school has been less than kind towards me or my child. The staff have been rude and abrasive. The lack of resources and competent staff leads me to believe that children who attend this program are going to have severe educational hurdles in their future.Parent Review6mo ago
