The Schuyler Mansion is a New York State Historic Site and National Historic Landmark located at 32 Catherine Street in Albany, NY. Philip Schuyler built it in 1761 on a low hill above the Hudson River, on an 80-acre estate he called The Pastures. The mansion is Georgian in style: symmetrical, classically ordered, with a center-hall plan, balanced rows of windows, and brick walls two and a half stories high.
Philip Schuyler and his wife, Catharine Van Rensselaer, were both descended from Dutch colonial families. They raised eight children in the house. Philip Schuyler was among the wealthiest men in colonial New York.
Why Is Schuyler Mansion Historically Significant?

On June 19, 1775, Congress appointed Philip Schuyler a Major General, third in command under George Washington, with responsibility for the entire Northern Department of the Continental Army. The Pastures became a hub of military planning. Washington visited, as did John Jay and Aaron Burr.
In the summer of 1777, British forces under General John Burgoyne swept down the Champlain and Hudson Valleys. When Fort Ticonderoga fell and the American army retreated, Congress replaced Schuyler with General Horatio Gates, one month before the Battles of Saratoga. Those battles ended in Burgoyne’s surrender. Gates claimed the honor but many historians credit Schuyler’s groundwork as the foundation for that victory.
When Burgoyne arrived at The Pastures as a prisoner of war that Fall, Schuyler received him with characteristic composure. Three years later, the parlor of the house hosted a wedding when Alexander Hamilton married Elizabeth Schuyler, Philip’s daughter, in 1780.
Albany Before The Pastures: A Quick History
To understand the Schuyler Mansion history, it helps to understand Albany itself.
The Dutch established Fort Orange on the west bank of the Hudson in 1624. By 1652, Governor Pieter Stuyvesant reorganized the settlement into the village of Beverwyck. In 1664, the English took New Netherland without a battle, and Beverwyck became Albany, named for the Scottish title of the Duke of York.
On July 22, 1686, Governor Thomas Dongan granted Albany a royal charter. For its first mayor, he appointed Pieter Schuyler, one of the most prominent figures in the Dutch-descended merchant community. Philip Schuyler, born 47 years after that appointment, was a direct descendant of that same family.
In 1754, colonial leaders gathered at Albany’s Stadt Huys to draft the Albany Plan of Union. Benjamin Franklin was one of its primary authors. Parliament never adopted it, but Albany had established itself as a city where consequential meetings happened.
During the French and Indian War (1757 to 1763), Albany served as the main staging ground for British military operations in the north. When Schuyler broke ground on The Pastures in 1761, Albany was already a city that had spent a generation at the hinge of imperial conflict. In 1797, the New York state legislature made Albany the state’s permanent capital, and the Capitol building began rising a mile north of The Pastures.

In the 1800s, Albany transformed at an incredible pace. In 1825, the Erie Canal opened, running 363 miles from Albany to Buffalo, connecting the Hudson to the Great Lakes. Albany became one of the busiest trading cities in North America almost overnight. Its population nearly doubled in the decade that followed, with direct steam boat and rail access to New York in the early 1800s. The old pastureland south of the city was too valuable to leave as fields.
