The teachers could care less about my kids when they attended. My son was supposed to receive extra help, due to learning disability, and kept getting suspended. No homework was ever assigned to him when he was out. My daughter dropped out, and ended up getting her ged, due to bullying from other students (no one cared or did anything). I finally withdrew my son as I was getting nowhere with the staff and they would also schedule progress meetings to happen when I was at work.

so far, our personal experience has been mostly positive. our daughter has a fantastic teacher that is so well-respected that he mentors other teachers at the school. our daughter enjoys going to school each day. the student body is largely minority, and i would like to see more staff of color. from my observations as a volunteer, the school’s biggest issue is that they don’t have enough staff to address students with behavioral problems. if a child is acting out or otherwise disrupting the class, it affects the quality of education. a ton of valuable time is spent on those students, and that’s a shame. i believe these children need more supports in place, bc they’re just kids. in each class there are a few students that regularly disrupt the class. if there were more effective supports in place for those students, some of this would be stymied. unfortunately, this school district has budget problems that prevent those kinds of supports. as a result, the quality of education is negatively affected.time will tell, if our experiences turn negative. like i said, we have an excellent teacher this year.

Recently changed name to Kent Laboratory Academy. KMVA merged with Kent Phoenix Academy (school for credit recovery). The school used to be a small alternative school for kids who needed a smaller environment than the mainstream schools. The principal is trying to turn it into an "academically rigorous" school but that is not why families chose this school. By student did better because of the quieter, smaller environment.Would be better with a different principal.I'm sad that I can't recommend this for high school. There is little direction about college prep, beyond enrolling in Running Start, but even that had to be pushed for. There are no extracurriculars, but they also don't help connect students with activities at their boundary schools.Good grade school classes. Middle school is a good option if your child needs to escape the standard hellscape of middle school.
