The school admin, staff and teachers are trying! But it's a difficult situation, with too many students and not enough space or teachers. I think the culture of the place will change a lot next year, for the better, when the new school opens and relieves the numbers problem some. In spite of it all, by kids had a great experience, with excellent teachers and amazing extracurricular activities, and now are in excellent colleges thanks to the hard work of the HHS faculty and staff!

This is the best school I’ve ever seen. The staff, principal, counselor involvement, student engagement, communication with parents, dual language, diversity. I see the low scores due to the low income families and I don’t agree with those ratings. Schools should not be judged based on the family financial background. Smithland teachers cares about the students and a actively engage with the students. The counselors are available for any emotional support needed. My children look forward to going to school and love their teachers. Janice Churchill is well loved as the principal. The staff’s demeanor and positive attitude is a reflection of her leadership. Smithland is a newer school in Harrisonburg but it is an exceptional model of what elementary schools should be.

This school has teachers who are the cream of the crop, every one of whom excels at their subject. The principal Mr. Glick is inspirational, hands on, and enthusiastic; which is evident from his daily ritual of standing outside: rain, snow, or shine to welcome and shake the hand of EVERY student who enters the school that day. I know of no other school principal who has ever bothered to greet every student walking into the building. The vice principal is always at his side. They're a great team! What a great way to start the day! The students are warm and friendly. There has never been a single known case of bullying since the school's principal, teachers and staff are have an open door policy and have zero tolerance for bullying. The building is new and very well maintained. Custodians do a great job and are very friendly and courteous towards parents. The room sizes are ideal- building was very well planned. My child (and my husband and I) will be extremely upset when moving on to high school because Skyline sets the bar so very high. I don't know how "greatschools.com" rates schools, but I give Skyline a 10/10. I can't think of anything that needs improvement.
