4/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageMany of the things mentioned already over the years are still apparent. School spirit is great, the IB program is rigorous and has sent students to top colleges and universities across the nation. I agree with previous reviews about the favoritism and politics which hold the school back as well as principal Paul Joseph and his aloofness unless he feels like engaging with you. Personally, I can say that since he has been there, he has never responded to one e-mail I have sent him for various reasons (none negative or complex, some even positive and upbeat), but I guarantee if is related to his high-profile football program he cannot reply and act fast enough. The crown prince of the Oscar Smith "good old boy" club is Ray Collins, an obvious beneficiary of this insular clique: he has run off many dedicated and experienced coaches (more than any other school in Chesapeake it seems). He is regularly unapproachable, generally incompetent, and simply has no business being an athletic director. Apart from these problems, the school has gotten way too large (2,300 students) and this makes the school less personal and too many students and staff get lost in the masses - not the way it used to be on Rodgers Street at the "old" school. In all honesty, Chesapeake Public Schools should build another high school in the Greenbrier area and reduce Oscar Smith to around 1,500 students maximum (1,200 would be even better). In more positive attributes: the community does a great job supporting the school and many students are more civic minded than your average high schooler. Many graduates go out and distinguish themselves in the world and some come back to share their past and current experiences with the school.Other Review1y ago - Portlock Primary School

5/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageThe administration treats these kids like juvenile delinquents. I'm presently searching for a home outside of South Norfolk because this school is the worst. The kids are restricted on nearly everything. Being a prior Tiger Alumni this is saying a lot I don't want my kids to have to deal with this school's nonsense. The principle is definitely part of the problem (top down). Take your children else where.Parent Review2y ago - Check out schools near 1216 Kay Ave.

"Quite elderly area. Low coating area. One of my most favorite things about living here are that we are close to the highway but not to close to hear it. The fire station and police delayed down the road and no HOA!"

"Was a little worried when I first moved into south Norfolk but I have really enjoyed the neighborhood so far. I feel comfortable walking my dog, there is a nice park near by, and my neighbor is so nice and friendly. There is a neighborhood watch group which makes me feel at ease but I have had zero problems or have felt uncomfortable even walking my dog at night. Street lights could be better but not bad. There is a dollar general within walking if I need something quick and the library is VERY nice. I like it here!"

"It's becoming more up and modern. Cleaning up the streets. More of an older crowd lives in the area. Love the older homes look on the outside but open living space on the inside. I believe the schools could be better but they are pretty decent. "

"This place is second to none, one of the best places for young children to grow up in, on top of the fact that the majority of families that live here are young families with young children some as young as 6-10 and therer are some older teens living in this area, given that people are not bias in their judgments in regards to this neighborhood nor are racist towards that people of other cultures and races and ethnicities this is a great community! whom ever chooses to live here has to know how well kept these homes are in this neighborhood, the people are friendly their children can be rowdy like any child in any neighborhood but I know all of my neighbors by name and we always have gotten along, and it's like a big huge family If you have kids this is definitely a place where you can expect your children will never be bored, there is lots of things to do here. and plenty of shopping centers all around and literally you have access to almost every highway that goes to almost every city withing a ten mile radius."
