10/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageAll of the teachers my kids have had are very dedicated to teaching and making my kids feel safe. This past year has been the best so far with a new principal who is visibly supportive of the students and employees of the school. My understanding is enrollment in multiple Portland public elementary schools have decreased during/post pandemic. The principal has been great at communicating with parents about ideas and the steps she has already taken to help keep class sizes reasonable as well as how to boost enrollment. Thankful she is coming back next year! I’m also grateful for the social-emotional education the counselors provided to my children’s classes when they were in the younger grades.Parent Review8mo ago - Hosford Middle School

7/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageStop lying, this principle lies and said she can handle situations that comes to this school. They talk to these kids crazy. This school is racist and has lots of drama and bullying. I will not recommend this school. I wish I would of did my research first. BE AWARE!Parent Review2mo ago - Cleveland High School

5/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageWe moved from out of state to Portland and researched schools before we came. We chose Cleveland because of the choir program and theater program. The website boasted 3 plays a year, etc. It was a bait and switch. We got there and the theater teacher was suspended for mysterious reasons and no productions only a substitute teacher that knew nothing about theater. After being an excellent student all her life my daughter started to have problems with her work and started hanging out with a bad crowd (school does nothing about kids leaving the grounds). This school only cares about kids who do well without effort. We spoke to guidance counselor at the end of 9th because we were concerned with slipping grades and some skipped classes and she told us not to worry and recommended a private academic coach, who cost us $2000 and did not help! I literally begged the choir teacher to give my child extra encouragement because I knew if she quit singing that we would lose her. Teacher did nothing. Only interested in the stars of the class. To make a long story short, this school grossly failed my child. After I insisted on an IEP out of desperation, they were slightly interested - interested in getting her off of their books! They pushed us to go to the Community College program, which was not suited to her needs at all and she failed it. Covid hit. She never graduated. Thanks, Cleveland!!!There are some GREAT teachers at this school, and some not so great but still very compassionate. The vice-principal (the principal was a revolving door when we were there) and counseling staff are the worst! They actually assigned a counselor to my child that was the mother of the student that caused my child a lot of grief. Completely clueless. The neighborhood is pretty awful also, if you are unfamiliar with Portland look at the setting the school is in - near Cleveland lots of camps and drug use in the park across the street, and strip bars less than a block away. No healthy food restaurants anywhere. Do not send your impressionable sensitive child here!Parent Review10mo ago - Check out schools near 1824 SE 23rd Ave.

What Locals Say about Hosford-Abernethy
- Trulia User

"This neighborhood is overall safe for kids, though it would be good to have most kids in eyesight during dusk hour."
- Nick K.

"Lots of sidewalks and different streets to walk down. Schools with large field areas that allow off leash dog activity. But a lot of dog owners are wimps and cross the street if you have a dog that resembles a pit. Dogs communicate through barking-it’s not a sign of thirst for blood. "

"Too many cats and squirrels live in this neighborhood! There is not a dog park in walking distance. "

"Hawthorne Street fair - access to dinning and entertainment. Walking access to food carts. Radically bike and walking. The neighborhood has a lush and diverse tree and ground canopy."

"I drive South, getting to the freeway kind of sucks, a freight train is in the way, same for the return trip, only you get to navigate a very poorly planned bridge as well."

"I have been in this neighborhood since 1975 and bought my home in 1989. I like living in this neighborhood because of it's mixture of business, commercial, industrial, apartments, condos, and single family homes. There is a plethora of eating and drinking establishments. Grocery stores of almost every range. There is so much. here is a short list: Vespa dealer, Subaru dealer, chiropractors, at least 3 great hardware stores, I can't remember how many pizza places, micro breweries, or weed stores. All of this and really quiet on weekends. "

Very friendly to all age groups and life styles. Excellent public schools and parks and playgrounds for kids and pets. Clean and well-kept properties with civic minded residents. "
