4/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageThe community-this is a community of people from more than 100 nations-its a beautiful fabric. That fact has always been overlooked, and will continue to be overlooked because at the end of the day, families have major concerns about educating their children, and the quality of that education. If you look at Central Islip's neighbors to the north-Hauppauge; to the east- Connectquot; to the south- East Islip; and to the west-Brentwood; you start to see a pattern. These towns are within a few miles in any direction. These children including Central Islip, all have the same desire to learn but there is a stark difference in the exam results. Why?Why are the results so different? So what is the constant? Could it be the experience at the school? Could it be the experience in the classroom? From experience, there is a punitive theme that greets every student and parent at the beginning of the year from teachers and administrators, so I'm not surprised at the punitive statistic. That seems to be the focus. Memo's are sent home to be signed about punitive measures at the beginning of the school year. It's definitely not a memo to outline on how I'm going to inpire, motivate and teach. There is a serious problem with accountabiity "in the classrooms" in this district. And it's the elephant in the room that no "one on the inside of this district" can fix. It's been like this for decades.Departments and teachers have a silo mentality when it comes to addressing learning. It's a place where people come to to ride the paycheck and guaranteed raises, without any requirements of performance wave. These are the highest paid teachers in the State of New York but consistently the worst in exam results for decades. Think about the irony!! How many decades of children have gone through this district with the same atrocious results. Families have moved out and brand new ones have moved in. Same results. Why? There were three items requested in this review. Describe the community(I give the people 5 stars). Experience at the school(3stars). What is it like in the classroom(1star). The poor performance of the school is being reflected onto the community when they are the least position to improve or change it. Kudos to those teachers who actually make a difference in this district. Pay very close attention to your children's schoolwork and you must supplement that at home as much as you can for their success.Other Review2y ago - Francis J O Neill School

6/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageMy daughter attends 1st Grade at Francis O'Neill and she loves it. I love that the faculty of the school makes every attempt and making the best of what is given to them by the school district. What i don't like is that there are 40 students in my daughter's first grade class. Also, what i don't like is that the school doesn't have a special class for gifted children. We love our daughters teacher and I feel that the Principal should be commended for the quality of her dedication and work she puts into her school and students.Parent Review12y ago - Ralph Reed School

"The violence, and gang activity. Let’s not forget the drug dealers, and the prostitution. My car has been broken into a few times. I don’t recommend anyone moving here. "

"I’ve lived here for 4 yrs , there is some good but there is a lot of bad as well ( some sections are very scary ) I like that it’s very central to stores and other towns for restaurants , some houses are well taken care of and others need to be condemned , it would be a great place to live if there were no gangs "

"Its a nice quiet area, great for families with kids. Very pet friendly. Not far from LIRR if you commute to city. Excellent shopping nearby. Close to Great South Bay, if you like fishing and boating. "

"Gang infested area with littered streets and too many forclosed homes. Pets roam free on many blocks. If the economy turns around and more people buy homes it will get better."

"I've been a local home-owner since right before they leveled Carleton Park and tossed out all the druggies in the late `80s. The area was bad then, but I moved in and gave it my best effort. It was worth it! The neighborhood has improved by leaps and bounds. We've got the college campus now, and the Court Complex, the Suffolk Ballpark, and Touro Law School... a new LIRR station... a great volunteer fire department... kids' sports... the Civic Association... an upcoming Historic group... a local police presence... new condos and co-ops... home-owners at Park Row and College Woods and additional mortgage lotteries... close to Irish Lane park and Museum. I sold my first house, bid on a large foreclosure... and won! So dig in your heels and stay put... houses are going for a song in today's market... bring in more friends you'd be proud to have as neighbors! Let's all push back, and retake the neighborhood on the other side of Lowell...!"
