7/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageBoth of our children attended Canandaigua schools from K-12. Both, we eventually learned, are dyslexic with slow processing yet are also above average to gifted intelligence across the spectrum of ability areas (as per neuropsychological testing). This school system systematically marginalized and bullied both our kids and both of us as parents. They inhibited/ directly blocked access to appropriate academic support and intervention which left the entire family both confused and isolated. Teaching staff were entirely untrained to effectively teach dyslexic readers which often led to blame for failures being focused on our kids as "lazy", "not college material", "unwilling to conform". Parenting classes were routinely suggested as a means of dealing with academic challenges. In 2017 NY passed the "Dyslexia Bill". Even this resulted in deadpan indifference from this school district. Years of anxiety, depression, isolation and bullying from this district DESTROYED much of our family's quality of life. As parents, coming to understand the situation of children with disabilities in an educational/ medical/ legal environment that blocks/ denies support takes years and is only made worse by the stronghold of NO SCHOOL CHOICE and the monopolizing influence of the NY State teachers Union. School taxes in NY and specifically in Canandaigua are some of the highest in the nation. 5/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageWe have three children in the district and have been very pleased with the teachers thusfar. There are a few less than stellar teachers but the majority truly care about their students and go out of their way to teach good character values. I love that the lines of communication are always open and the superintendent and principals keep parents updated regularly including during the pandemic. "It’s a wonderful place to live, grow up, and raise your kids. It’s still the “old” Canandaigua! The rest of Canandaigua has exploded, the north shore isn’t welcoming, anymore. It used to be the place anyone could go to. Very happy and friendly ,very welcoming. Family friendly. "

"Sidewalks & friendly neighborhood& at the same time people mind their neighbors privacy. Summer time is nice, however, on Saturday nights if the breeze is blowing in the right direction, you’ll think the dirt race track was either right outside your front or back door depending which side of the street you live on. "
