5/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI am a graduate of JH Rose and both of my daughters also graduated from there in the last few years. Rose is a very challenging school that has way more AP courses than any other high school in Pitt County. The school also is one of 30 something schools public or private in all of North Carolina that is an AP Capstone school. Rose received this qualification because of the amount of students who receive very high scores on their AP exams. Each year over 6 million dollars is offered in college scholarships and students go to colleges all over the country including many Ivy League schools. Many of the teachers who teach these courses have their Masters degrees and know how to teach the courses correctly. Rose has a great sports program and great programs in the arts. The only Honors Orchestra program in Pitt County is at Rose and the band has won many state awards. The theatre program along with a local news channel won an Emmy for a commercial they collaborated in. The Mock Trial program and Robotics program have both won state and national awards. I could go on and on with the awards won by groups of students and individual students at this school. There are a large number of students attending Rose from lower socioeconomic backgrounds and the school has put several programs into place to mentor these students and it is making a difference.Parent Review6y ago - Wahl Coates Elementary School

3/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI have been very happy with the experience and education my child has received at Wahl Coates. The school really does seem to identify the needs of the students as individuals and address those needs by giving additional attention and assistance and/or adding academic challenge into their day! The staff has always created a feeling of "family" and acceptance.. Wahl Coates also has created a culture of character amongst not only their staff but also the students creating a high expectation of kindness and respect.. We love this school.Parent Review6y ago - Check out schools near 2409 E 4th St.

What Locals Say about Tar River

"I lived in this area for a little over 3 years. The area was mostly quiet, although gunshots and fights would break out occasionally at various apartment complexes in the area. We liked being close to the greenway and the dog park, but college kids don't keep their dogs on leashes and it resulted in my dog and I being attacked several times (she was unharmed each time luckily). This area is a low-cost living area to get your foot in the door until you can get something better. Dog owners be wary of apartments close by and college-aged kids with dogs. "

"College kids drive too fast and don’t keep dogs on leashes. They also don’t pick up after their dogs. The dog park is a block away but it’s unkempt. "

"This is a wonderful neighborhood with an extensive Greenway across the street. We walk everywhere including school, church, restaurants, festivals, concerts, and the library. The FROGGS organization work tirelessly to make this area walking friendly and beautiful! Sometimes I think gnomes might peak out from behind one of the old trees lining the path as I take my puppy for a stroll. "
