DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILD HERE. They are unsupportive of students and parents. When you ask for help on how to use tools like Canvas, they will not respond, even when asked several times. As a parent you will have a hard time getting direct communication from the Guidance Counselors. They are too busy dealing with bad students to help you, even if new to the district. The teachers are inexperienced and even possibly not accredited to teach in their fields. They do not have any meaningful electives. The children can be violent. There is lots of fighting on campus.

Principle Buchanan has great teacher buyin and is making it a desirable place for teachers. Students can feel the love and loyalty. Also great library program, STEAM, robotics club, gardening class and tech programs

My child attempted this school for kindergarten and had an amazing experience. Everyone from the teachers to the office staff was wonderful.

We were so unhappy with our child's experience at this school that we transferred him out. There is a discipline problem that affects the entire learning and social environment. Kids are allowed to bully and beat on each other on the playground with little to no adult supervision. The new principal hired several of her friends to teaching positions, and those hires were absolutely terrible. Very unprofessional all around. I am sure that there are some very good teachers at this school, but many parents that I speak to are furious about the situation there. It is a tragedy for the kids.

My daughter loves Vance and played school when she is at home. She turns into her teachers. Who has always shown her love and security!

Very open-minded and creative, experiential school. I am really happy to have my child go here. It’s not pretentious, overly controlling or rigid and yet the academics are stellar as well. They have a garden and outdoor activities, and a number of good teachers.

SILSA students get the benefit of a small supportive environment with caring, involved teachers, a principal who knows every student's name and a student body with a community feel. At the same time SILSA students have access to the numerous elective courses available at Asheville High - a great combination. It has also been great that the school has made parents feel welcome and involved as we have been invited to help judge presentations and projects throughout the year. Our daughter is just about to finish her first year at SILSA and we have been extremely pleased.
