Discovery Middle School has a history of ignoring or inadequately addressing the root issues around bullying. While the school made in change in Principal and Assistant Principal in 2022-23, there is a lack of attention paid to the key reasons students are bullied or intimidated: 1) Politics, 2) Race or ethnicity, 3) Religion. Numbers 2 & 3 are largely influenced by Number 1. Additionally, there is no protection for students who dare to report instances of bullying behavior. Though there is supposed to be an anonymous reporting system in place, the student reporting these occurrences is typically identified and sent to work out the issue with the perpetrator or put in the unacceptable role of defining what it is they want done about it. That's not a middle-schooler's job; when they work up the nerve to report a problem it should be handled by staff, NOT students. If you're not on the far right end of the political spectrum, support any despised "liberal" issue (feeding hungry kids, discounting activities to low income families, recognizing any kind of bigotry, etc), and your child isn't enrolled in confirmation classes at a preferred church, your child will have a target on their back. This rural area is fully entrenched in its politics and religion, and not welcoming or accepting of those not living their lives in absolute alignment or non-white.
