"I had the opportunity to live in the Vine neighborhood for the past two years, and while I was hesitant at first, that feeling went away shortly after move in. I had heard from friends that the crime (in particular, break-ins) near Vine had been rising consistently for the last couple of years. On the other hand, I had friends who raved about the tight knit feeling that the neighborhood brings once you live there. In the end, both friends were right with their opinions. Once my friends and I were all situated in the new house, it wasn't difficult finding fun things to go do. The area were lived in on Vine was right around our age group (20-24), so it was great in that aspect. I was able to run early mornings or mid day and felt completely safe doing so. If any area felt a little rougher than usual, I simply changed my route. Being close to the tailgates for the WMU Football games was great, and so were the neighborhood parties afterwards. You're easily within walking distance of quite a few bars, restaurants (most are overpriced) and being in the range of Bell's was great. Now for my negatives. I only stepped into one house that was remodeled on the inside. The houses are old, having lots of cracks and crevices, so they're naturally perfect home for stray cats, mice, and even raccoons. We had to actually get a raccoon removed from our basement, and two houses neighboring us suffered from an awful mice problem. Better clean well if you plan on living on Vine. The parking situation for most rental houses was pretty awful, prepare for a parking ticket or ten if you have to park on the street. The crime and safety in the neighborhood is "meh" at best. I never really felt unsafe, but house and vehicle break-ins happened on a regular basis. Though 2012 was worse for that from what I saw. Luckily, the neighborhood cop (+ a few others) patrol actively throughout the day, and even more at night. Overall, if you're looking for a cheap and fun area to live in, go Vine."
