Additionally, there is an original brick smokehouse (not currently used for smoking); a small frame barn and a machinery shed/corn crib. East Oaks was originally part of a 3,000 acre plantation called Killmain. Ludwick Young II moved with his family of 10 to the property and was considered a successful farmer introducing new and advanced agricultural techniques to the area. His son, Henry, inherited the farm and built the current home, the guest quarters, the bank barn and other structures. For the current owners, horses have been the primary focus; but several acres have been cultivated for organic farm to table produce and raising organic chickens. Many sites on the property have been documented as being a part of the Civil War. The farm remained in the Young family until 1909; eventually Daniel Callahan Jr (a Riggs Bank executive) purchased it 1942 as a family escape from Washington DC and they owned it thru the early 1980s. The seventh grade teachers are enthusiastic and really pass thaton to the students. The eighth grade teachers are powerhouses. The English teacher is Teacher of the Year in Montgomery County, the science teacher is solid and prepared my child well for the ecology magnet program in PHS. N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI love this school. PHS is a great place to feel comfortable, prepare for college, and recieve useful knowledge. Every program is unique and interactive. Personally, I am a Global Ecology student, and I absolutely LOVE the program. It's so inclusive and the field trips provide so much experience. My first field trip was a camping/hiking trip to Harper's Ferry in the first 3 WEEKS of school. The teachers are amazing and I can guarantee you, most students like almost all of their teachers on the first day. There is absolutely no bullying or safety concerns, as most students are very education-focused. Although the work load can be stressful, there is no useless/busy work assigned as homework. I feel incredibly immersed in what I learn, and honestly, it is so worth the bus ride. There are so many extra curricular activities at PHS, and the clubs and sports are diverse. Mental health matters a lot to the administration, and they listen to their students. For example, only certain classes can test on certain days, like math classes only test on Wednesdays or Fridays. The staff listens to the students. Families are welcome and they are definitely shown as partners in their children's learning, and this is shown on the school website. Activities and community events are always showing up, and it's really inclusive. "Lived here for two decades. Have always felt safe with a great sense of community. Moved here when our daughter was 9. She made many friends immediately, just in time for summer before middle school. Raised three kids here, and have enjoyed it very much."
