Pristine and private antique colonial on idyllic nine-acre setting on Chebacco Lake. This First Period saltbox, built in 1684 by David Burnham of the Essex ship building family, has been lovingly restored and reborn as an elegant country retreat offering multiple options for living, income and recreation. The home's distinctive design'"diamond pane casement windows, massive central chimney, tall cedar shingle roof and cedar siding'"instantly transports you to a time when this nation was young, while the surrounding landscape and grounds, with carefully nurtured English gardens and lawns sweeping down to the lake and forest, are utterly enchanting. 2020-02-26

7/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageWhile this school resides in an affluent town, the quality of education is disappointing and deteriorating. The school doesn't have a librarian, new books are ordered and no books can be recommended. Supporting literacy has been shut down. The teachers are by and large are robotic and do not invite critical thinking or encourage true discussions challenging thought or opposing views. Critical race theory is taught throughout varying subject matter yet most notably in 8th grade Civics class. Typically classwork and homework are prefab worksheets that are useless and busy work. 6th grade science is full of take home worksheets. Teachers are not proactive to reach out to parents nor seem incredibly vested in students' academically. The 6th grade math teacher is abysmal, you will be warned to hire a tutor to try and support your child. The principal lacks leadership in influencing her staff and has dismissed continual complaints about the poor math instruction and how it is negatively impacting generations of students' mathematical foundation. This school is rated a "6" and that is generous. Should your child have any learning challenges or concerns, they will be dismissed and continually deterred from pursuing .The school lacks ingenuity, parental support, and outstanding leadership.Learning is not fun or creative. Language arts are not provided in 6th grade! There is limited arts and extra curricular programs are weak if not non-existent.I would NOT recommend this school. Many parents move their kids to private school once they have experienced this middle school for all it lacks yet MANY of us can't afford the heavy ticket price of private school. How can the education be this poor and the teachers be so disenchanted and apathetic. There are definitely some gems, not all are rotten eggs. A lot points to poor leadership=>administration.Other Review10mo ago - Check out schools near 57 Pond St.

What Locals Say about Essex
- Jenny S.
- Resident
- 5y ago
"I like that there is a no-leash law in Essex because the neighborhood dogs visit my porch often. I also feel concern at times when I see dogs on busier streets."
- Ernies3

"The town needs a leash law to protect the dogs and possibly a dog park to run the dogs. Dogs are frequently get hit by motor vehicles something needs to get done "
