6/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageThis school is absolutely horrible when it comes to bullying and harassment. The school says they care however when students speak up about bullying however nine times out of ten the staff tells them that they, the staff, the people who are in charge "can't do anything about it" if your really lucky a teacher might tell them to stop it but that's about it. That is the most they do. This can go for how they treat sexual harassment to. Another one of this school problems is it's obvious favoritism if someone who doesn't play sports does something that would normally result in a supensension they will get that or worse if someone who is on the football team does the same thing they'll get a detention at most. To add to this when students who aren't athletic get in in even the slightest amount of trouble staff will yell at the students until they start to cry. I have heard of two or three staff members yelling at one student one of the staff there had never even met the student. The school has a passbook system that punishes students for basic human needs. If you use the restroom during passing period and are late to class because of it they will take 1-2 passes. If you are in class and need to use the restroom they will take a pass. On the off chance you used all your passes you aren't allowed to use the restroom during class hours and if you are late you get a detention. We use the left over passes as extra credit at the end of the quarter. This whole system might not seem like a problem at first however I have a friend with blatter issues, yes she has a doctor's note but they still take passes for her as they would any other student, ignoring her medical condition. The saddest part of it all is that there are a lot of amazing teachers here but unfortunately the bad few have the most control. My final verdict is that I wouldn't recommend sending your kid(s) here, if they aren't athletic their lives will be hell and if they are, they will most likely grow to be absolute jerks. I'm sorry if this is l all over the place but I felt the need to get this off my chest.Student Review1y ago - Mcgaughey Elementary School

What Locals Say about Decatur

"I dislike living in Decatur. The only good thing about it so far is that it is cheap to live here, but I do not feel safe when I'm out of the house. I constantly have to worry if my car will be stolen or vandalized while I'm not paying attention. I constantly hear gunshots at night, emergency vehicle sirens, noisy train horns, people getting into loud arguments and fistfights, it seems like it never stops. The air in Decatur reeks like cheap dog food if you're lucky, and like a wastewater treatment plant if you're not."
