1/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageThis school is a school to didnt impact my child's High school education I personally believe that this school need a few changes and this school needs a entirely new faculty and staff because my child came home every day and didn't have and homework or even any books or nothing in her bookbag and this concerned me alot . So I went up to the school to talk to the Dean and all her teachers and as I enter the school I see young men pants below their waist and I here them yell out many foul words in front of security guards and they just stand there with no intentional remark or response and at that moment I could see that the faculty and staff members doesn't take pride in their work and the students doesn't take pride in their career and education, now don't get me wrong the school has a couple bright and intelligent kids and teachers but majority of the kids and teachers need an intervention. Now as I talk to my child's Dean she explains to me that this school isn't bad and our faculty and staff members are very important and intelligent when it comes to children and that's pretty much what her teachers said too. All I'm saying is that all schools should have the best faculty and staff members and students that take their education and job serious but Harlan doesn't it is completely different. My child is at butler college prep now and she is doing tremendously great she is a senior and is about to graduate with a 3.6 gpa and I'm not trying to brag or nothing like that I'm just sharing my story about Harlan.Parent Review8y ago - Ryder Elementary Math & Sci Spec School

5/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageMy son attends this school.. It is terrible for he is in a diverse class room that do not care about student learning goals. Also the office workers need to be fired as well as the assistant principal. This school is understaffed and does not show concern for the some students, Mainly students with disabilities. This school does not watch the students effectively. My son has an IEP, I receive a call from a parent stating he was with a group of kids.. The school didnt even know he was gone. Once I contacted them the next day. Their response was, "He knows the routine for dismissal" I could have lost my son that day if it wasnt for that parent calling me. My son will not be returning back to that school.. & for parents, please get contact information (name and number) from other parents and vice versa. You never know if you may have to call one day.. I wouldn't want no parent to go through what I went through..Parent Review5y ago

"I've lived in the neighborhood just over a year now, as I have walked through the neighborhood with my dog and driven through it. There is Barton Elementary school close by and the area seems pet friendly. 79th street is busy with a lot of negative activity the further east you go. However the further west you go becomes more peaceful and family oriented. There are several new shopping options like Walmart, Dollar Tree and Aldi that have opened on 76th and Ashland. The community has both homes and rental apts available, however there seems to be an uptick in rehabbed home sales that are causing the home values to significantly increase to 200k plus, several have listed for 300k that were complete rehabbed homes. The good news is younger families are moving in purchasing the rehabbed homes, and many long term residents have lived in their homes 30 plus years. Most of the blocks are quiet, you dont see gangs on the corners, nor do you see drug dealing or prostitution. the area has a city of chicago incentive zone, so many police, teachers, fireman and other city "

"The neighborhood is still very high crime, but the majority of people are still good working people. We all are trying to survive. The area is desert land unfortunately...No groceries, Bank, CVS, and Save A Lot all left recently within 6 months. Aldi on 76th and Ashland and Walmart Grocery but Walmart is very expensive. The area probably will benefit from change but is going to take some time. "
