5/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageMy daughter started here since 2nd grade, with Miss Catalano, 3rd grade with Mrs. Barron, 4th grade with Mrs. Villate and 5th grade with Miss Kresner. All ot them are excellent teachers. Always dedicated to their kids and their right development, always motivating us as parents to get involved and help our children. Not saying the other teachers are bad, I'm just talking from the great experience we've had with this teachers that have been a great inspiration and support for the kids. There's always something new and different to learn from a teacher and they all really made a difference in my daughter's life. I'm specially thankful with Miss Kresner who's always running the extra mile to give the kids all of the resources and her knowledge on technology to open their minds to things they maybe never thought before. Obviously the school isn't perfect, their food can improve without affecting their already low budget, and with more team work between parents and teachers substancial changes could be possible. Let's just not blame the school administration, we all play an important role in our kids education and if we as parents need changes, we have to get involved.Parent Review7y ago - Van Nuys Middle School

What Locals Say about Van Nuys

"Very walkable streets and high dog population neighborhood. Lots of people out walking in the evenings on a nice day, many with baby strollers, dogs or both."
- Adam Harman
- Resident

"We moved to this neighborhood as a predominate work-from-home location. It’s a good community with lots of lot space where even in heavy commuter traffic you can get to the west side in ~45 mins. This feels especially satisfying compared to further out communities that people go for similar space but require 1-1.5 hour commutes each way."
- Adam Harman
- Resident
- 1mo ago
"Neighborhood has yearly events, such as a holiday get together and the area draws a lot of people for Halloween festivities. There’s a number of young families that have come into the area in the past couple years and there’s good above average interaction and playtime amongst them, compared to other areas of Los Angeles from experience."
- Daisy De La Rosa

"Car is required. You can’t move around freely if you don’t have a car. But there is public transportation if you are willing to put up with it."
- Trulia User

"There are so many happy dog walkers in my neighborhood. But homeless people are lining the periphery. "
- Trulia User

"Very friendly neighborhood and kid and pet friendly, in zip code 91406 the streets get re-paved like every two years or so, kids go out trick or treating, decorations are put up and taken down on time, I’ve lived 20 years here and the prices of homes have gone up more than twice of what we got it for."
- Trulia User

"live in a safe area for our children, where we have many things at hand, and above all a school for them. "

"I’ve lived here for 2 years and have witnessed over 30 major car accidents. Buildings set ablaze by homeless, trees as well. No dog owner ever picks up their dog. And everyone speeds on most streets."
- Trulia User

"No parking and some people have their broken down cars sitting there and take up 3 car spaces to save parking. "
- Trulia User

"Van Nuys is a community full of wonderful people and families that appreciate their homes. Unfortunately, the city does not do enough to keep public area/settings clean nor well-kept. Streets are never cleaned, sidewalks dirty, roads/potholes are rarely fixed. It’s a shame to see how neglected this great city is. "

"There's a lot of traffic and you basically have to run red lights to get anywhere. It's loud too. Sirens constantly go off at all times of night. I live above a bus stop so I have to listen to crack heads yell at each other all night too. Don't move here. "

"The diversity in the people. Otherwise it's not safe, it's not very friendly, and parking sucks. I wouldn't live here again unless I had to. Which was the case for the first time. "

"There are a decent amount of vagrants in this part of town. Overall it’s a fairly decent area with pretty good food options. "
- Trulia User

"Better to have your own transportation but traffic is always an issue. The parks are somewhat maintained but there are many issues with homeless encampments in public areas."
- Trulia User

"There are bus stops near the area on almost every corner but I would not suggest walking anywhere around here the people drive way too fast and there’s always somebody asking for change "

"There’s a great school on erwin street and also by the Costco so you don’t have to worry about them having a safe place to learn. However the streets here tend to get shady at times "

"I’ve lived in this area for 6 years. You have to be careful here. There are some great little neighborhood pockets with nice homes and friendly families but it’s surrounded by low income apartments and homeless camps. "

"I've lived in van Nuys for a year and just like every city in California it has it's good spots, If you move here move closer towards Sherman oaks area its much better, and safer for kids. the closer you get to panorama city and Reseda the more you will hear helicopters and see more crime"
- Charmar M.
- Resident

"The county doesn’t care about our community. The only special event is the Wednesday low riders on Van Nuys. "
- Jayy C.

"quiet area lots of crime not a lot of parking and rents are overpriced not buildings are not taken care of "
- Christopher B.

"It’s dirty. People have no pride in their homes, yards or neighborhoods. No one picks up their dog poop. "
- Cesia
- Resident

"I've lived in this neighborhood 20 years, almost my whole life. It definitely gives me cozy vibes and just makes me think of family- good food, sometimes disorganized & loud, but pretty much harmless. It's definitely right in the middle of Sherman Oaks & Panorama City in many ways. "If you know, you know"."
- Hasani.sinclair
- Resident

"To be quite honest, this doesn’t feel like an ideal neighborhood in which to raise a child, or at least, not my particular street. The smaller streets would be much more ideal"
- Violet E.
- Resident
- 4y ago
"Not really a "neighborhood" type of area. Everyone keeps to their own, but if you strike up a conversation they will gladly be polite and talk with you"
- V90
- Resident
- 4y ago
"This neighborhood is currently attracting allot of restless and invasive homeless people lately. At night there is allot of police activity going too."
- Transplant
- Resident

"Not a very safe neighborhood. Officer involved shooting in front of my home and they closed down access to the street until the following day. Lots of prostitution and drug addicts roaming around "
- Bkny
- Resident

"People dump wherever they want. Shootings close by. People are loud. Cheap rent is the best part. Otherwise, it doesn’t feel too safe. "
