2/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageDuring my time at Thurgood Marshall Academic High School, I was challenged in all of my classes, and I felt like I always had an adult at school that I could trust. Additionally, I like how are school, is small because it's almost like we're one big family, and even though we're different one thing we all have in common is we all care about one another. Furthermore, I know that Marshal was not my first choice but to any new students, Marshall is a great school with some very great teachers and lots of support.Parent Review11mo ago - Lincoln (Abraham) High School

7/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI had a really fun time at Lincoln. I dropped out during Covid but I made a lot of cool connections and saw a lot of interesting things. It was a very fun time and I enjoyed every second of it. Off campus lunch means students can go down to taraval and enjoy some of the food. It also means its very easy to leave school at any time because none of the doors are locked! Which is awesome if you don't care about school. I had a lot of cool and caring teachers/staff here, big shoutout to Aaron Yang, Mark Ruffalo, Omar Campos, Joel Balzer, and Lance Tagamori. The staff here cares about their students and wants them to succeed, they understand the variety of adversities that students face and are willing to help anyone succeed. I highly recommend Lincoln to anyone who wants to have a somewhat challenging school experience that fosters growth and life skills. The school is great. If you apply yourself here you will succeed and grow, I did the opposite but still learned a lot about life. I have very fond memories of my time here and wouldn't trade it for anything. Only reason it gets a three for safety is cause it's easy to leave and I knew a lot of kids who brought weapons to school, but these weren't dangerous or malicious people and only people who wanted to stay safe because of the neighborhood they live in and it is likely 97% of students were unaware to this fact, so don't worry.Other Review4mo ago - Balboa High School

9/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageWe have two kids at "Wash" and they are both thriving in their unique ways. One is requiring additional educational support which has been fostered by the teachers and the amazing counselors, and the other is more self-motivated and is able to take advantage of the advanced classes offered in the subjects they enjoy. Additionally, each area of the school, whether it is the arts or athletics has teachers that are encouraging and will motivate kids to try something new. Finally, we have found that the core curriculum classes have teachers that will work with your child to actually learn the topic, so they are prepared for college or just a lifetime of learning. The best way I can describe it is that it is a classic traditional high school that has the kids interests at heart.Parent Review6mo ago - Denman (James) Middle School

5/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI went to this middle school and there was a particular counselor i think her name was rebecca hensler. I remember going to her for help because I used to get bullied by this white kid whose mom also works for the school at the time. She did not stop the bully at all. As a matter of fact, she just buy all of his middle school set-up stories with false accusations to continue bullying. other than that the teachers were cool and P.E was funParent Review1y ago - Lowell High School

10/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageThree decades later, I’ve come to appreciate the safe haven (for sf) that Lowell provided for me. Stressful? Check ..safe? Check ….. challenging/competitive? Check …. Camaraderie among students and lasting relationships? Check, but you do need to go outside your comfort zone and find your tribe - May take a year(s) … teacher quality? Average….. this school literally saved me and my siblings from having to attend our dangerous neighborhood high school in the city. We were definitely not the brightest, but we put in quite a bit of effort. And that’s all you need. From there, it’s a high probability that you can go to a UC bc Lowell’s reputation does carry a lot of weight. One caution is if your child is overly anxious or does not deal with stress well in terms of academics or testing or a highly competitive academic environment , then I think Lowell may not be the best for a student for his/her mental health. And that’s perfectly fine bc grades are just that and perhaps just a subjective judgment of knowledge or competency in a subject at a particular point in time as compared to the pool of students in one or two classes. And it’s not the end of the world if you don’t go to the best academic public high school in sf.Other Review10mo ago - Mission High School

7/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageMy child was mercilessly bullied and this was hardly noticed by staff, in our few years here we saw allot of teachers and coach jam leave, some of this came with budget cuts but some is just the changing culture of a “rising school”. The individualism of families in million dollar homes driving German cars and switching their kids out to private is very evident, this is a magnet school for lower performing zip codes and a parking lot for its own zip code, parents openly talk about getting out of public before jr high, we found that our kid (though getting good grades) was way below his grade level at private. Though sunnyside won’t admit how many kids should be repeating grades due to learning loss, the entrance tests tell a different story.Rough kids are never disciplined, the school social worker has them signing contracts for behavior that don’t hold any weight. We had reports of open threats of violence at least weekly. Stuff that would be a felony for an adult is glazed over with a “restorative conversation” among 7 year olds. It will help if you play soccer, have your kid wear shin guards all day as kicking is a common salutation among peers. I felt like I needed to deprogram my son from the casual violence in this school. Kids are constantly telling each other to “shut up” or worse and the bullying is out of control particularly after returning to in person. As this is one of the better SFUSD schools they get some good teachers (we were there k-3) but they don’t stay, I don’t think the new principal is bad, I think the school was a mess when she stepped in. I think there are a handful of involved parents willing to do the uncomfortable work a mixed income school needs and allot of checked-out parents who shuttle their kids from this free option to a screen. The school adjusts to the non existent attention span of techies children with busy work, there is little room for collaborative work or individual growth in a school this size, moving to private we see longer projects and more collaboration but we are also repeating a grade by moving our child as the school will not hold kids with obvious delays back. We were constantly told our son was “doing fine” when he’s a full year behind. This was a working class neighborhood school. Today this is majority single income homes with a few diversity hires, it actually reminded me of my first Silicon Valley job in the early aughts, utopian but an unstable environment with a revolving doorParent Review1y ago - O'connell (John) High School

8/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageGreat small public high school in San Francisco. There is no lottery or wait lists to get into classes including APs like at the large high schools in the district and lower ratio of students to counselors. There are three pathways to choose from in the Junior year. If your student wants to play sport, they will be able to do it here. The majority of teachers are great, some exceptional and all care about the students. Location is central and easy to get to. Recently, the school was awarded a grant for their gardening program. Principal has a positive presence and keeps the community energized and updated. Go Bulldogs!Parent Review4mo ago - Burton (Phillip And Sala) Academic High School
- 9-12

6/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageThe education here is very terrible as the teachers are severely underpaid and are not motivated to make sure the students have the best education. Teachers and staff also are known for being involved and taking sides with teens during drama and conflict and often take favoritism. many problems about this school include the bathroom policies where they don't allow students to use the bathroom for a little less than half a period (20 mins). Teachers and staff treat using the bathroom like it's a special privilege and fail to emphasize with students. Burton only allows a handful of students to use the bathroom and only one 1 of the 3 bathrooms is usually opened, leading to a chaotic transition period between classes where you have to pick whether to hold in your juices or risk your attendance absent. The principal of the school is also super unprofessional as she lets her own biases and political agendas influence her decision-making. For example, the JROTIC and other military branches were removed and blacklisted from this school, as she wants to pump up the numbers of students who attend college, in turn making the school statistically look better than it really is. (and that's putting it lightly)The lunch policies are also the worst, as they serve an inadequate amount of food, with an inadequate amount of nutritional value per meal. Often, I have to go through the day with an empty and my bladder full. Overall this is not the place for you if a great education is what you are looking for.Student Review9mo ago - Jordan (June) School For Equity

"Oceanview is a hidden gem in San Francisco. Walking distance to Balboa Park BART, 3 Muni light rail trains and multiple buses. Get to downtown SF in just 10 mins on BART, then escape the craziness in this quiet, scenic neighborhood with great views. Property values are starting to climb quickly as buyers realize the great value you get for your money here. "

"The Oceanview neighborhood is surrounded by Merced Heights and Ingleside comprising the OMI district. The OMI area of San Francisco is the next Mission district. There are coffee shops and shopping on Ocean Avenue and Alemany Streets. You have City College and SFSU adjacent and much of the OMI is inhabited by college students and academics who enjoy the lower rents and great views of the Bay and the Ocean from the OMI hill. There are great recreational facilities with indoor basketball, childrens programs and even neighborhood gardens. Gyms, food, and the nearby Excelsior districts provide plenty to do. Though if you prefer the comfort of a mall, Stonestown, Westlake and Lakeshore malls are a short bike ride away. Got kids? Lowell High School, the oldest and best school west of the Mississippi is located next door. Give the OMI an opportunity and it will win you over. It's still a little rough around the edges, but the potential is great and price is lower than anything else in San Francisco."
- J M. P. C. C.
- 13y ago
"Homes in this part of the city have a bit of a mixed reaction. On the one hand, the houses tend to be older (average for all of S.F., actually), on the other, the area is a melting pot of San Franciscans. However, if you're looking for a good house in an area that has no where else to go but UP, then this may be a good buy (at this price) -- depending on the updates."
- J M. P. C. C.
- 13y ago
"Ingleside or Oceanside are traditionally older neighborhoods, and houses in these communities, unless they've been upgraded or remodeled, are typically needing some attention to detail. This house seems to have plenty of character and has been tastefully cared for. With the exception of the sometimes rowdy or boisterous visitors along the main (Broad or Sagamore) streets, you're in a fairly decent San Francisco neighborhood -- a good alternative to Visitation. You've got to drive the neighborhood to determine if it will suit you and your family."
