"It's a dog-lover's paradise. There's so much space for walking a dog here—probably 50 acres on the hill alone. You'll be exhausted when you're finished walking that."

"Except for among the people who live here, this is one of San Francisco's best-kept secrets, and that's what's so nice about it. It has tranquility and cleanliness. The streets are not littered, and it is not too often that you will see a syringe lying on the ground as you do downtown. Bernal Heights is also built on solid shelf rock, so it's a safe place to be in an earthquake. Commuting up to this neighborhood, you'd better be ready for lots of turns and twists and hills. The higher you go, the more lost you can become if you're not from around here, but it's actually fun getting lost in this neighborhood."

"There's a park that is a favorite spot for dog owners to bring their dogs to because it's specifically a 'leash free' zone. It's a pretty large park too."

  • Jennifer M.
"As more people move in and out of the area, the streets have become a little more crowded with traffic at certain hours of the day. It's most noticeable when dinner time approaches and people are coming to eat at the restaurants on Cortland Ave."

  • Jennifer M.
"I think what makes this neighborhood unique is its mix of old and new. You can find small old-style Victorian houses and large modern homes in the same area. Also, the Alemany Farmers' Market is within walking distance from where I live. Every Saturday, local farmers bring their produce to sell, and on Sunday there is a flea market."

  • Jennifer M.
"There is a library and elementary school in the area as well as parks for children to play in. The neighborhood is relatively safe as long as parents keep an eye on their kids."

  • Nona S.
"It's a very tightly knit community—everyone seems to know each other. Its main street, Cortland Avenue, is about four blocks of boutique shops and cafes. There's a fair each year called Fiesta on the Hill and they show movies in the park a few times a year."

"We are so lucky to have craggy Bernal Hill in the middle of everything we do in the neighborhood. We love to picnic at the top of the hill, the wind whipping around us, looking out at a 360-degree view of the city."
