4/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageMy child’s first week of kindergarten, I overheard a staff member encouraging a parent to use corporal punishment against their child. “Some kids need more than just time out,” she explained. I took my concern directly to the school psychologist. There was no follow up with me, and that staff member still works there. My kindergartener was sent home with at least an hour of homework every night. There was a journal, numerous worksheets for ELA and math, and for every book we read, they were supposed to fill out a “book report” page. IN KINDERGARTEN. I pushed for an entire school year for some sort of speech therapy intervention, as my kid clearly was struggling to pronounce things, and it was obviously affecting her ability to learn phonics. They wouldn’t even consider it until more than halfway through the year. Then they said they would have her assessed—and nothing else ever happened. I asked repeatedly when my child would be meeting with the speech therapist. Heck, when was **I** going to meet with the speech therapist? Apparently the answer was “never,” as just two months later, COVID happened. So imagine my surprise when I came back a few months later (the next academic school year) and found out that other parents had been receiving speech therapy services via video conferencing (Zoom or whatever) ALL SUMMER?I want to give them a pass for the scramble of when COVID hit, but after that, returning for the next school year, they had this absolutely ungainly system of iPads with half a dozen or more apps. Every teacher was given free rein to use from a huge list of programs. I asked if my student could use a different math program, as they were operating way ahead of grade level on math. “No,” was the resounding answer. The teacher had worked all summer on this plan and everyone was going to be using the same apps, at the same time, while on video with the teacher and other students. Why? Why??? Most of these programs are designed to be operated by a child with no one over their shoulder. How are any of these kids helped by being shoehorned into the exact same spot in the exact same curriculum instead of letting them work at their own pace? All this technology and y’all want to act like they are literally sharing the same textbook—“Now, Timmy, you can’t turn the page until Susie is done reading.”They bragged a lot about their music and arts programs, and my child never even experienced one. Later explanation was: “Oh, those start in 2nd grade.”Parent Review3y ago - George Washington Preparatory High School

2/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI am a black parent of a child who was attending Crenshaw H.S. This is an under performing school that needs to be shut down. The inner city need vouchers. They need to shut down this school for failing students in both math and English. People, we need to wake up...we are and should not be victims of our own government institutions!!!!!Other Review7y ago - Horace Mann Ucla Community

"I lived in this neighborhood for over a year. The weekends are loud you can hear music being played from houses down the street. Not walkable at all. Huge dogs everywhere and doesn’t feel the safest. Pretty dirty and unmaintained. Closest grocery store is a food for less which is dirty and not where I would want to buy my groceries."

"I've lived here for 3 years now and some of the neighbors are friendly and we all look out for one another. There's a laundry mat right across the street from where I live so it's really convenient when laundry needs to be done a plus about that is I don't have to cross a busy intersection it's right on the corner of a residential neighborhood. "Like most of L. A. , we are over - crowded by families who exceed maximum occupancy; averaging about 30 per household. One bedroom apts hold 3 generations. Everyone gets a loud birthday party and all parties are outside. Good luck finding a parking space on the same block. "

"There are a lot of lose dogs around the neighborhood and many aren’t trained so it can pose a threat to your dog. People don’t pick up after their dogs so there is poop on the sidewalks. Also it can be hard to walk your dog because there is a lot of trash on the street and sidewalks so your dog might chew things up. "

"Fairs and parks are plentiful, small block parks everywhere. We have 3 in a 8 block radius There is a homeless problem; that’s all over the country Theft is very low people respect each other’s property in that way. Not the prettiest are the newest but is fairly safe I catch the bus to work and it is actually the best bus line in the city of Los Angeles comes every five minutes it goes from Gardena to Hollywood every five minutes "

"Be diligent parents regardless of your neighborhood. Children look to their parents for guidance and protection. If economic means makes an undesirable neighborhood more suitable, bring awareness to your children about the importance of being humble, yet not allowing that same economical situation to be a hindrance to achievement. "Always a long commute. Wether I drive or use public transportation. The streets have also been redone to accommodate bikers & scooters with their own lanes but most riders don’t follow the signs or lights. You have to be a super defensive driver."

"There aren’t any that I am aware of. No sense of community here. It has a long way to go. The old houses are beautiful. Parking is a nightmare. Proximity to metro is great. "
