8/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageBear River is a smaller school but has so many opportunities for students to get involved and be part of the community. Their course offerings are robust and the staff is helpful and truly cares about the students. The administrators support the school rules and when they know about a situation where students don't feel comfortable, they step in and help, as they should. They also enforce dress code, safety and no bullying policies. The school has clean and newer facilities including an outdoor pool and beautiful theater. The curriculum is rigorous and prepares students for college, if interested, or career. Can't say enough good things about Bear River.Parent Review1y ago - Lyman Gilmore Middle School

5/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI am a previous student who was pulled from this school during my 8th grade year. I had 4 F's, and a math teacher who was extremely short tempered and had an obvious dislike to me over others. (Harsher punishments, etc.)However, the final straw was when said teacher put me outside for a total of 53 minutes in the sun for a minor offense. (Said offense being "not being on task," when she only said it was basically free time, and "disrupting class," which was laughing to myself about a joke from two years ago that I happened to remember.) She has always disliked me, punishing me more than other students even if my peers were behaving worse than me. She also considers herself better than other teachers.Other Review6mo ago - Margaret G. 4/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI have received so much support from Scotten school, My son has an IEP and the staff has really worked with us and have been willing to accommodate my familys needs and have been open minded and caring in the process. I have had a unique situation and I felt we have became a team in support of my son. My son is very happy at school and feels excited to tell me about the new things he learns and he is fully integrated with his peers and is learning at his pace with positive encouragement from the entire staff. Classrooms can only cover so much and I feel that working with my son in the evening on the lessons he brings home from that day help me understand what they are doing at school currently . It bridges the gap for me and I find it helpful to review the lesson before doing our homework. I am very pleasedParent Review9y ago - Bell Hill Academy

What Locals Say about Grass Valley
- Christine Cook
- Resident

"Not a lot of dog parks downtown but miles and miles of hiking trails where owners can bring their dogs as long as they stay on a leash. Most pet owners are very responsible in this community."
- Christine Cook

"It’s a quiet neighborhood with mostly Victorian homes. It’s near a high school but that doesn’t seem to affect traffic or the peaceful atmosphere. It’s fairly close to Hwy 49 so there’s a lot of background noise but one gets used to it pretty quickly. There are several nice parks and trails nearby. It’s a decent place to raise a family. It’s also within walking distance to of historic downtown and shopping. "

"We have a vibrant downtown area with community events offered several days a week, many of which are free. Grass Valley residents tend to be creative and artistic. Many residents own local shops to display their wares. "

"Yes people walk their dogs every day here! There is a nice trail as well as the street. No sidewalks is the only weakness."

"Fireworks, we are all usually very friendly. there's a County Fair most kids go to in the Summer. There have recently been a few pride events, and the toy drive for kids in need drives through the neighborhood."

"Alta Sierra is one of the nicest and safest communities anywhere in the vicinity. Neighbors are friendly. HOA only costs $40/yr and is a wonderful community organization. Great clubhouse, golf course, restaurants, pizza parlor, auto repair, elementary school. Quiet. Absolutely lovely. Herds of deer roam freely everywhere. Only 3 miles to town. But far enough out of town to really enjoy being in the country. Lots of amenities."

"if working in Sacramento it about an hour. in town 15 minutes. Traffic is tough in Auburn due to traffic lights in the morning and afternoon. HWY 49 is very dangerous and almost one lane half way to Auburn. HWY 80 can be bumper to number during rush hour, so 8 miles can take 30 minutes or more."

"Grass Valley is great, but something strange in a brewing in the air around here. whatever it is it's not good. But schools are great!! There is a lot of homeless and illicit drug use and I'm not talking marijuana either. At first, I thought the people were nice, but I think that's only in Penn Valley. Grass Valley has many younger/middle-age folk that act like they are in high school and are brutal to new comers. That being said, I have met many kind individuals who have been welcoming."

"Friendly neighborhood, fairly quiet. Most neighbors know each other's names and watch out for each other."

"This is a great location. It's on a quiet cul-de-sac with only five homes. Walking distance to downtown Grass Valley (0.75 miles) and to hiking trails at the Empire Mine State Park (0.1 mile). Family friendly neighborhood. Very safe. "
